The world is in a state of crisis, and there are countless concerns more pressing than the release dates of two video game consoles, but we all need something to fill our brains with other than the doom and gloom of the daily news. As such, many gaming fans have been questioning whether or not the Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 will still be able to hit their holiday launch windows, and, at least for now, the answer is yes.
Microsoft reaffirmed its plans to launch the Xbox Series X this holiday season in a breakdown of technical specs and internal components on Monday. Those plans could always change in the weeks and months to come, but the plan is still to have the next-gen console out by the end of the year. As for Sony, we still haven’t heard much about the PS5 (not yet, anyway), but we now have evidence the console is still set to arrive in 2020.
If you’re a gamer, you have probably read reports in recent days from analysts who are convinced that coronavirus will cause the new consoles to be delayed. That might indeed end up being the case, but BAAS Amsterdam, the PR firm that represents Sony Interactive Entertainment Benelux, told LetsGoDigital (which has been the source of many major PlayStation leaks) that the launch of the PS5 has not been delayed “for the time being.”
Of course, as the publication notes, if the pandemic is still causing supply issues for components in a few months when production should be kicking into high gear, Sony might have no choice but to delay the launch.
In the same story, LetsGoDigital revealed that the Bonami SpelComputer Museum in Zwolle, a city in the Netherlands, is currently working on a PlayStation 5 Experience Zone. “Gamers are looking forward to the arrival of the PlayStation 5,” said the owner John Groenewold. “Our museum will receive the PS5 as one of the first in the Netherlands. We are already preparing for this, so that visitors can experience the differences between the PS4 and PS5 for themselves. Obviously we also have something nice in store for the Xbox enthusiasts, more about that later.”
Sony will finally share more details about the PlayStation 5 in a deep dive presentation on Wednesday at 12 PM ET. This is the first time that Sony has discussed the upcoming console since last October, and while we aren’t sure what to expect, we hope to see the console in the flesh and get an idea of how it will perform.
