Breaking out the comforter each year can be a bit depressing because it means sunny summer days are gone, and winter weather has arrived. Of course, it’s much less depressing when you have a fluffy, snuggly, super-comfy comforter that feels like a dream. We tested all the most popular comforters out there — nearly 50 in all — to find the very best ones. Here, the product review experts at BGR will share our picks for the best of the best based on your unique preferences.

Our top picks

  1. Best Overall: EASELAND All-Season Quilted Duvet Insert
  2. Runner-Up: Bedsure 7-piece Comforter Set
  3. Most Chic: Bedsure Vintage Tufted Comforter Set
  4. Best Comforter Set With Matching Sheets: CozyLux Bed In A Bag
  5. Best Down Comforter: DownAero Goose Down Comforter

You definitely can’t go wrong with any of those fantastic comforters. If you want a deep dive into why we picked each one and what makes it great, you’ll find all the details down below.

1. Best Overall: EASELAND All-Season Quilted Duvet Insert

Pros: Super soft, ultra comfy, machine-washable, very warm, great price

Cons: Doesn’t include a duvet cover

If you want the best, most versatile, comfiest, warmest, softest comforter out there, the EASELAND All-Season Quilted Duvet Insert is the answer. It’s the best overall comforter we tested, hands down.

This down-alternative comforter goes with any decor because it’s a duvet insert. That means you can use it with any duvet cover you already have, or you can buy a bunch and switch things up every so often. Thankfully, this comforter has corner tabs, so you don’t have to worry about it getting bunched up at the bottom of your duvet cover.

Of course, you can also use this EASELAND comforter with no cover at all. It’s super soft and very warm all on its own.

Despite being the best overall comforter we tested, this option is also one of the most affordable ones you’ll find. The Queen is priced at under $40, while the King size was priced at around $80 at the time of this writing. Smaller sizes are available too, and they all go on sale with discounts all the time.

2. Runner-Up: Bedsure 7-piece Comforter Set

Pros: Low price, lightweight but warm, soft, comfortable, comes with matching sheets and pillowcases

Cons: Less versatile, not everyone likes the pinch pleats

Some people love a thick, fluffy comforter to snuggle up underneath. If you fall into that category, definitely go for our top pick above from EASELAND. But the other half of comforter shoppers prefer something a bit thinner and lighter. For them, we recommend our runner-up: The Bedsure 7-piece Comforter Set.

This Bedsure comforter set is what’s known as a “bed in a bag” because it comes with everything you need in one set. That includes the comforter itself, plus bed sheets, pillowcases, and even shams.

Perhaps the best part is the price, since this full comforter set costs as much or even less than a typical high-quality set of bed sheets. That means you can buy this set in a bunch of different colors and switch it up constantly to fit your mood. And since this Bedsure set gets discounts all the time in every size, you simply won’t find a better value out there.

The only real downside with this set is that not everyone likes the pinch pleating on the comforter and shams. If you’d prefer something similar with a more conventional look, check out this CozyLux comforter set, which is our pick for best comforter with matching sheets.

3. Most Chic: Bedsure Vintage Tufted Comforter Set

Pros: Sleek look, soft and comfy, great quality, 28 color options

Cons: Thin

Shabby chic is very in right now, and it doesn’t get any better than the Bedsure Vintage Tufted Comforter Set.

This vintage-style comforter is a fan favorite because of how chic it is. It has an awesome vintage look that’s straight out of a farmhouse or a SoHo loft. It also comes with matching pillow shams to complete the look.

Thankfully, this comforter isn’t all show and no go. In addition to having a chic look, it’s also wonderfully soft and comfortable. It’s on the thinner side, so it doesn’t sleep too hot. That’s a plus for people looking for all-season bedding, but it might be a drawback if you want a very warm comforter.

Our favorite thing about this comforter is the variety. With a low price and 28 different color options, you can really get your creative juices flowing. Some colors even have variations on the pattern, so it completely changes the look.

4. Best Comforter Set With Matching Sheets: CozyLux Bed In A Bag

Pros: Comes with matching sheets/pillowcases/shams, soft, breathable, machine washable, great look

Cons: Doesn’t fit extra-deep mattresses

The CozyLux Bed In A Bag is by far the best multi-piece comforter set out there if you want matching sheets, pillowcases, and pillow shams. We mentioned it before as an alternative to our pick for overall runner-up.

Just like the Bedsure 7-piece Comforter Set, this CozyLux set comes with seven pieces that include everything you need for your bedding. You get the comforter itself, a fitted sheet, a top sheet, two pillowcases, and two pillow shams. If you want your bedroom to look totally put together like a real, honest-to-goodness grown-up, look no further.

CozyLux’s high-quality comforter is soft and breathable, so it’s warm in the winter. It still works when the weather warms up a bit, though we wouldn’t recommend using it during a heat wave. You can still use the rest of the bedding from this set during the summer, though.

18 different color options let you match the decor in any bedroom. You can also pick up a few different sets and switch things up since this comforter setup is so affordable.

On the downside, the fitted sheet that comes with this set is only recommended for mattresses up to 16 inches deep. If you have an extra-deep mattress, you’ll need to look elsewhere.

5. Best Down Comforter: DownAero Goose Down Comforter

DownAero Goose Down Comforter

Rating: 5 Stars

Pros: Real goose down, insanely warm, Egyptian cotton, soft and fluffy

Cons: Expensive

All of the other comforters in this guide are down alternative, so they’re great hypoallergenic options that are also affordable. If you’re willing to spend a little more money on the real deal, however, it doesn’t get any better than the DownAero Goose Down Comforter.

DownAero’s goose down comforter is by far the most comfortable, fluffiest, most luxurious down comforter we tested. It’s also ridiculously warm. It has a fill power rating of 900, which is even higher than my premium down jacket that I wear in the winter!

The company uses premium goose feathers that have been cultivated for more than 200 days. The feathers are hand-picked, so each one is perfect, and you won’t get tiny feathers poking out at you. The down is also meticulously washed in a 33-step process to ensure that it’s hygienic.

Of course, the outer layer of a down comforter is also important, and DownAero shines in this department as well. The sateen cover is 100% Egyptian cotton with a 1,000 thread count, so it’s remarkably soft.

As you’ve undoubtedly guessed by now, there is one drawback with this comforter: it’s very expensive. If you want the best, you’ll need to be prepared to pay the price.
