Last year I wrote about how I lost 50 lbs in just three months. It certainly wasn’t easy, but I discussed the tools and methods I used to make it happen. Beyond everything else though, the most important realization for me personally was this: weight loss is a game of numbers. Barring certain physical conditions, you will lose weight if you consistently burn more calories than you consume. It’s a wonderfully simple concept but it can be incredibly difficult to maintain, and I discussed several ways I managed to do it.
As the saying goes, “every little bit helps,” and a reader just emailed me a note about a nifty calorie-cutting invention that couldn’t be simpler.

Thailand has one of the highest rates of obesity in Asia and much of the problem stems from the cuisine. It’s delicious, as anyone who’s had Thai food can attest to, but it can also be very heavy and greasy. In an effort to address that issue — and to generate some buzz — an advertising agency called BBDO Bangkok partnered with the Thai Health Promotion Foundation to do something about it.
Via AdWeek, we find the AbsorbPlate. Yes, it’s just a dinner plate. The pattern you see on the plate pictured above isn’t solely decorative, however. It’s actually formed by 500 perforations that were created to absorb some of the oil commonly found in Thai food. The agency says that its plate can remove 1.5 teaspoons of oil from food while you eat, which translates to a 30-calorie reduction.
In other words, you’ll cut 30 calories from your meal simply by eating.
30 calories doesn’t seem like a lot, but as I mentioned, every little bit helps. And let’s put it in perspective: A 180 lb person would have to walk for 20 minutes at a pace of approximately 2 mph to burn 30 calories.
