In addition to the upcoming HTC One successor, HTC apparently plans to launch its own wearable device, quite possibly a smartwatch, later this year to help turn the company around, an HTC exec told Bloomberg in an interview. A “renewed focus on marketing,” is also one of the pillars of HTC’s planned reinvention.

The HTC M8, which has been featured in many leaks and rumors so far may be unveiled at some point in March, although nothing is official just yet. More interestingly though, HTC appears to be ready to join a slew of prominent mobile device makers in the wearables ecosystem.

The company has apparently been working on its own smartwatch for a while and suggests it solved certain issues with such a product, although an actual HTC smartwatch would only be launched in time for this year’s Christmas shopping season. Details about the device have not been revealed yet.

“Many years ago we started looking at smartwatches and wearables, but we believed that we really have to solve the battery problems and the LCD light problems, Chairman Cher Wang said. “These are customer-centric problems.”

Wang also acknowledged one pressing problem for HTC, the lack of proper marketing, which it hopes to fix this year. “To tell the truth, we never think marketing is that important – this is really not very good,” Wang said without revealing the company’s marketing budget for 2014.
