When Apple revealed this past Tuesday that its flagship iPhone 5s will be powered by the world’s first 64-bit smartphone processor, I jokingly tweeted that Samsung announced it is now working on the world’s first 128-bit smartphone chip. It turns out I was only half joking. The bit battle is now underway and Samsung’s mobile boss JK Shin has reportedly confirmed to Korea Times that upcoming smartphones from the world’s top vendor will also be powered by 64-bit chips. He suggested that Samsung might not ship a 64-bit phone in the immediate future, but said “our next smartphones will have 64-bit processing capability.” Shin may be referring to next year’s Galaxy S5, which earlier reports claimed will ship with a new 16-megapixel camera and maybe even an aluminum body — finally. In the meantime, Apple’s iPhone 5s is set to launch on Friday, September 20th.
