Right now when you log into Netflix, you’re presented with a sea of titles that can be overwhelming if you don’t know what you’re looking for. However, in the future Netflix plans to pare back on the number of titles you’ll see on your post-login screen to just three or four personal recommendations that it thinks will be surefire hits based on things you’ve watched in the past.
As TechCrunch reports, Netflix chief product officer Neil Hunt said on Monday that it hopes that personalized recommendations will completely replace the current grid that we see after logging in. Hunt said Netflix’s goal is to feel confident enough in four or so recommendations of what you’ll want to watch so you won’t need to browse through titles anymore.
However, Hunt also said it would be “unrealistic” for Netflix to find the exact title you want to watch each time since it has no way of figuring out what you’re in the mood for — so for instance, it might send you a recommendation for a comedy you’ll find hilarious but you won’t feel like watching it if your dog just died, which is why it will also send you recommendations for dramas and action movies you might like as well.
All the same, this seems like a really interesting ambition on Netflix’s part and we can’t wait to see how well the company executes it.
