RIM to add foursquare support to BBM

mobile

During the BlackBerry World Keynote in Orlando this morning, Research In Motion announced that it is working with foursquare to include support for the social-network in an upcoming version of BlackBerry Messenger. Users will be able to share their location information as their BBM status, but RIM execs didn’t go into much detail on how check-ins will work or just how feature rich the implementation will be. The native foursquare client, for example, allows users to find nearby deals, compete with friends for check-in points, and more. RIM did not say when the client would make its debut, although we suspect it will be around the launch of its BlackBerry 7 powered Bold 9900, which will occur later this summer.

What a game changer. Nicely done RIM. Which CEO spearheaded this operation? Either way, kudos.

    Foursquare is stupid.

Last one in is a rotten egg.

Yeah, whenever a company is losing market share and desperately trying to implement products their competitors introduced a year ago, I really say, “those guys sure know what they’re doing”

A game changer? Are you serious? Location check-in stopped being cool months ago. It would nice to see RIM in front if a wave for once instead of forlornly paddling hard to catch up.

I don’t understand Foursquare… it seems dumb to me.

    RIM is really grasping, eh?
    Foursquare…BING…Cross Network BES…”New” devices…
I also find it amusing all the excitement over the new apps that are being made for the Playbook!
Remember? The PlayBook has a full blown browser so it “doesn’t need apps”!
RIM isn’t dead yet, but it is quickly losing it’s footing as one of the “power players” in the smartphone lineup.

For an awful lot of things it really doesn’t need apps. Pandora, engadget, photobucket, youtube, drop box, angry birds, hulu (with a easy to use work around), scrabble, uno, freecell and a hole bunch of other crap all just work from the browser. It is fun to go in to App world and see that almost every single app written for the PlayBook can just be replaced with a book mark in your browser.

But it don’t matter, Apple’s marketing made everyone believe they have to download an app to do anything with their device. So everyone thinks no apps = no fun. That is why RIM is going for the tonnage. People never stop to think how many apps they would actually use or how many of them are utter garbage. Consumers just see a big number and are happy with it. RIM knows the majority of mobile apps can be replaced with a good browser. Just consumers don’t.

Foursquare? Should be more like onesquare, twosquare or at most, threesquare. Nobody has 4 of anyone left on their BBM is my guess.

looks like it shows check-ins from foursquare to the BBM status, but not to provide check-in service in BBM. well, love this integration
