In the wake of last week’s devastating earthquake and tsunami, Apple, Inc. has announced that it will postpone the release of its iPad 2 tablet in Japan. The iPad 2 was scheduled to launch in twenty six international markets — including Japan — on the 25th of March; the company will go forward with its release in the other twenty five markets. “Our hearts go out to the people of Japan, including our employees and their families, who have been impacted by this terrible tragedy,” wrote an Apple spokesperson. The company has yet to communicate a new launch date for the product.

All I can think of is that there will be at least one person that considers this to be another disaster.

I would think that the last thing those people are worried about is an iPad 2.

does anyone else really hate the overused expression/term “terrible tragedy?”

as if there are “happy tragedies” or “jolly tragedies” or “wonderful tragedies”

The iPad2 sure did cause quite a rumble in Japan..

    • Brian

      Too early for that one.

    • Dumbfounded!

Let’s show some compassion here. People have died and all you have is a joke about their plight!! Come on Man, at least pretend to have a soul!!!!

Relax. The joke wasn’t even funny.

        Sorry to stir things up..

Read: Cupertino wants to wait until they have the full attention of the Japanese so they can gouge as many consumers in that market as possible. Nice to see that when it comes to marketing strategy, even the folks at Apple will yield to Mother Nature. Still waiting to hear what they’re committing to Japan to help the disaster relief…

Unlike other electronic companies, Apple has been helping out folks in Japan during the events. People are allowed to camp outside the stores for Wifi access and employees and families are given permission to sleep at the stores. They also provide charging and computer / Internet access to everyone coming into the stores to check for news and communication. Tens of millions of people in Japan don’t have access to electricity and Internet right now, a lot of folks are using Apple’s stores as a communication hub (which Apple is fully supporting).

Yes, kudos to the local effort directly implemented by the Japanese employees who were affected themselves, but I still want to know what Cupertino is dedicating to the effort beyond being okay with extraordinary practices in their Japan stores and taking care of those employees? How is free wi-fi, charging cables, and a few snacks and drinks helping the folks whose homes were wiped out by the tsunami wave? I’d like to see a seven figure donation to the organizations providing relief efforts in Japan from a company that is clearly raking it in hand over fist.

It’s both an emotional and strategic thing to do. It also helps Apple divert more iPads to Europe and other places that don’t give a damn about the crisis. Oh don’t say people do care, it had zero effects on Friday in the US.

The quake happened on friday around 2pm many people where in line for hours by then. Did you think they were going to say “man those poor people in japan forget this ipad lets go home and morn”?

    Clearly the biggest tragedy here
