iPad 2 features redesigned case, wide-range speakers according to report

Tablets

Citing an anonymous Chinese source, Japanese Apple enthusiast site Kanteidan Blog reports several unconfirmed details about Apple’s upcoming second-generation iPad. The case on the iPad 2 will feature notable design changes compared to the current iPad model, according to the report. It will measure 239 mm by 186 mm, which is slightly smaller than Apple’s current 242.8 mm by 189.7 mm iPad case. The back will reportedly be flat instead of convex, like the current model’s case back, and the bezel surrounding the 9.7-inch display will be smaller. Finally, Kanteidan’s source claims the iPad 2 will feature wide-range speakers for improved audio quality. Apple’s next-generation iPad is expected to begin shipping from manufacturers in January or February, with a release likely falling some time in the first quarter.

    All other tablets….meet your Daddy.

    • Lower case i equals perfection

I absolutely agree. The iPad 2 will be revolutionary. I mean, it’s a few millimeters smaller on one dimension. OMFG!!!!! Apple could double the price of the iPad 2 and it still wouldn’t be charging enough money for such a monumental upgrade over the equally magical iPad1.

Revolutionary? no. Evolutionary. Charge double. No. Charge the same for more features… yes.

The iPad vs the current set of ‘tabs’ is less about specs and more about ‘performance’ (not like in 0-60 time, but in Bolshoi Ballet sort of seamless beauty of sight, sound, story, and production).

I’m not holding my breath, but my wife is expecting one in her Easter Basket;-)

you my friend obviously don’t get the word “sarcasm”

I subscribe to the internet rules of 1988. appropriate emoticons are necessary to convey anything other than the presented words as fact. If you want to be sarcastic, either toggle [/sarcasm] or enter the appropriate squiggly smiley :-}.

I have a feeling the Ipad2 will be inferior to the competition in terms of hardware specs. However, having the most populated App Store, and the Apple brand will lead to Ipad2 probably having the best sales vs. competitors.

I think the last part of your statement explains a lot. Apple doesn’t have to knock it out of the park with iPad2 (maybe they will maybe they won’t) but the fact is that Apple only needs to continue to grow their sales. The satisfaction number will keep the current owners buying and the new buyers will most certainly become satisfied owners of Apple gear.

The most important thing to Apple is that both users be iTunes account holders. iTunes has been the factor since day one. Businesses do not cling to Windows because of how great the platform is. They cling to Windows because of the huge investment they have in the platform. Apple has known since the drawing board that if they have people investing in media from their store they will retain most users.

      Open new stores
      New customers buy Apple gear
New Apple gear users become iTunes account holders
      iTunes account holders purchase media
iTunes account holders want/need new devices so they buy more Apple gear

      Open new stores…….

Since I don’t own an iPad I am hoping they knock it out of the park on the specs because I would love to make up an excuse to buy a new tech gadget (it’s been about 18 months) but they certainly won’t need too.

My concern this year are the number of companies that are going to dive into the Tablet space and simply crack their skulls open on the floor of the pool. The market is in no way large enough to support all of these players.

“Apple has known since the drawing board that if they have people investing in media from their store they will retain most users.”

Isn’t “investing in media” another way to call a ball and chain?

      • Chris

Didn’t Apple remove the Apple-specific DRM from the media in iTunes?

Another ridiculously long-winded rant about apple’s genius. This has to be Jarrett. If you talk about beta or wave one more time…

so far looks like slight enhancements so far, hardware wise. Nothing major but i dont think anyone was expecting a total redesign.

  • Tony

    please…..iPad is sooooo 2010.

  • D_Town_Tony

I heard iPad 3 will be even smaller with roughly a 3.5 inch display and the ability to make phone calls! PHONE CALLS! sadly my sources also say the call quality is going to suck…….but it’s still gonna be revolutionarily magically delicious!

All I want for Christmas is stereo speakers.

  • winterlich still

Pew, the speaker on the current iPad is laughable. Its mono…. If apple build the speakers (stereo) from the amazom kindle then there is SOUND!
I never understanded apple. A tablet with such a bad sound? WTF. No stereo webradio in the bathtub.

I’m highly skeptical of that image. Does anyone really think that Apple would interrupt the smooth lines they care so much about to have an ugly looking speaker grille like that?

    • mj

look at the bottom of a iPhone 4

  • KCRic

Speaker upgrade! Time to jack up the price and everybody go out and buy a new one. Oh, how great it will be – I love dropping hundreds of dollars for a new renamed product that I already have that does absolutely nothing different or better.

    • mj

i wonder how many phone manufacturers do this…. Apple, Blackberry, Android, Palm,……do i need to continue??? Steve Jobs is brillant at taking our money. He knows that he could include all these necessary features out the box but why should he? The key is to add these features on the second version to make even more money. Even if each device plays catch up they will sell out because its Apple.

      • Drew

He might be brilliant at taking YOUR money but he’s not getting any of mine…. At what point do we stop calling this a “brilliant marketing” scheme and start to call it for what it is >>>Being a CROOK!! One year these said “features” aren’t necessary but the next year they are… “We weren’t first but we think we got it right”. It’s cut and paste for crying out loud. I think people want to call this nonsense brilliant only to justify their ignorance. I was taken for hundreds of $$$, he must be a genius. Just shoot yourselves…

Price and performance will sort out the market.

There has yet to be a game changer just attractive evolutionary market offerings that appeal to people who have disposable income.

  • jason6g

when it comes to sales, apple >>>>>>all others

that being said, i am personally more interested in a powerful snappy windows (pc windows, not wp7) or android tablet – something functional on a day by day basis, not simply a large smartphone.

adobe flash, full featured document editing, and SOME informative widgets are what make my day easy now, so i am personally not going to shell out $600+ for an ipad with improved to the current “normal” standard in speakers, and facetime.

while i dislike apple for its shortcomings and i love the new breed of competitors for where they picked up, it would be really nice to see apple really hit one outta the park, not just push another shiny piece out with their logo

im curious what the nvidia tablet will hold, but i know it will be disappointing compared to apple for all the minor finishing touches

  • Ger Mooney

That is piss poor craftsmanship and not the work of Apple.
