Amazon’s Kindle Wi-Fi is sold out ahead of Christmas

Retail

The Amazon Kindle’s position as one of the top electronics gifts of the 2010 holiday season is reaffirmed today as Amazon notes that the Wi-Fi-only version of its popular eBook reader is currently sold out. New orders will not be delivered until after Christmas, and Amazon suggests interested parties purchase the more expensive Kindle 3G instead, if delivery by Christmas is desired.

Due to overwhelming customer demand, Kindle (Wi-Fi) is temporarily out of stock. Orders placed today will arrive after December 24th. Order now to reserve your place in line. Our Kindle 3G for $189 is still available in time for Christmas.

Amazon’s Kindle Wi-Fi is very affordable at $139, and it currently sits at No. 2 on Amazon’s list of best-selling products. The Kindle 3G — which, at $189, costs $50 more than the Wi-Fi-only version — is No. 1 on the list.

Thanks, Mike

Kindle and just about every other tablet device :(

Ya…I opted for a different reading device for my wife for X-Mas….

For good reason….the Kindle by far is the best device for what it’s sole purpose is – Reading. Love mine.

Didn’t see why these were so popular until I saw in person my friend’s Kindle. Absolutely amazing. Never thought reading digital text could feel just as good as a real book.

No wonder people say junk devices like the iPad are horrible in comparison.

Well…the iPad and similar devices aren’t supposed to be just a reader. They’re multi-function. How does the Kindle fair as a Word Processor? Oh wait..right…it doesn’t do that…

Totally different use, and targeted audience…

Not having to worry about if you ARE or ARE NOT within range of a WiFi access point makes the $50 premium for the 3G version an essentially “no brainer”. I have a feeling it too will be sold out no later than tomorrow.

For many you download your books well in advance of reading them.

I can see 3g being nice… but I’d never use it. Load up lots of books and I’m good to go for a LONG time.

If I need something on demand I have other gadgets that are always “connected” and able to serve that purpose. Also… I still prefer newspapers and periodicals in hand and not e-versions so I’m not downloading them on a daily/weekly basis.

The 3G is good for people who perpetually travel.

I’m not sure – all but the cheapest motels carry wifi these days. It would be hard to NOT find a place to sync up every day, unless you’re in the wilderness or working at a truly remote location. The reason they’re pushing 3g is that it’s *very* easy for people to make impulse purchases when they can buy something as soon as they want it, without having to wait. (I know, I use the Kindle app on my BlackBerry … don’t want to think about how many books I’ve consumed in the last two weeks… )

    Shows in stock for me…

Same here, along with offering delivery on December 23 and 24th.

(Checking made me learn that that the wifi only version only comes in graphite. Didn’t know that.)

While I appreciate the new Kindle for how well designed it is, I can’t get behind the proprietary Amazon book format. So this season, it was a new Nook Color for me.

Sorry A-zon. I still get my video games from you…

ePub with DRM isnt what I would call “open”.

Don’t let principles cloud your practical actions.

I too did not like Amazon’s proprietary format that prohibits downloading books from other sellers. So I opted for the regular Nook. The Kindle is a great device though.
I have tried reading off of an Ipad and it kills my eyes. Some say that it doesn’t bother them, but it bothers me. Eye strain is non-existent on the Nook and Kindle.
    I like competition.

It’s not sold out. You can get the Kindle wifi delivered on December 23 and 24 still.

Bunch of idiots creating news out of nothing. We are all glad BGR loves the kindle and wants to help promote sales, but do it with an ad bar on the side, not a full blow article….

Really, there was no need for this shameless promo for amazon. Thankfully other tech sites haven’t joined this parade.

It actually was sold out prior to the article being written. I tried to buy one on Sunday and it listed as not in stock. Monday they even went to far as to take it off their home page.

this isn’t about whether the story was true or not at the time of writing, it is about whether it belongs on BGR or not. The stock of a product at an online retailer is not newsworthy or consistent with the theme of this website.

in any case, the article should be updated to reflect this 180 change, but they won’t because they need filler and drive more traffic to the site.

      • Cer

Actually, they should correct the post. They frequently update posts.

You can even order one today and get it tomorrow.
