Gmail Creator: ‘Chrome OS has no purpose that isn’t better served by Android’

Software

A lot of people are thinking it, but former Google employee, Gmail creator, and FriendFeed founder Paul Buchheit has come right out and said it. On his FriendFeed page, Mr. Buchheit has levied some harsh judgements on Google’s netbook-centric Chrome OS. Here are just a few of his thoughts:

Prediction: Chrome OS will be killed next year (or “merged” with Android).

I was thinking, “is this too obvious to even state?”, but then I see people taking Chrome OS seriously, and Google is even shipping devices for some reason.

Chrome OS has no purpose that isn’t better served by Android (perhaps with a few mods to support a non-touch display).

It is still unclear how Android and Chrome OS will peacefully co-exist after the tablet-optimized Android 3.0 comes out in 2011, what the genesis of Chrome OS looks like, and what the public will gravitate towards. We’re interested to hear your thoughts concerning the Chrome OS vs. Android debate. What do you think? Too similar? Or is Google one step ahead of the technology pundits?

Android is by far the most POWERFUL OS EVER built. We have pitted Android devices next to IBM and Cray supercomputers and just ONE Android device is way more powerful… In addition, Android is built by what I am sure will be the ONLY tech company alive in the next 5 years, the most perfect company, the most awesomest company, led by the most awesomest person alive, Eric Schmidt. Of course, I am talking about Google. And Goofans (aka Apple Haters) will be in charge of the world because we are the smartest people ALIVE! Bar NONE!

lets be honest…. this is googles ios for netbooks…a dumbed down featureless OS for simple people

I guess they are trying to attract Apple Fanboys. LOL!!!! We Goofans (aka Apple Haters) know that Apple Fanboys are typically the dumbest people alive. I feel bad for them. They can’t help it and in turn they are so envious of us Goofans (aka Apple Haters) because we have the highest IQ’s in the universe. Last average I got pegged us somewhere in the neighborhood of 250 IQ.

You must be an iSheep that gets offended with the truth. Or better yet, the facts…

No, I’m a true apple hater that can appreciate humor, even at the expense of my beloved Android. Norm does it well. You r posts are a lame attempt to copy him.

No, I am not trying to copy him. I am trying to draw people like you out. People that won’t admit that they are Apple Lovers. You’re a closet case. I feel pity for you!

This is the first time that I’ve heard of this guy, but I have to agree. It seems like Android would serve this purpose much better. It already has the momentum and developer backing.

Being that I am not a developer or programmer by any means – the one use I can understand for both OS’s from google would be the potential direction of future tech. Knowing how much both mobile devices and portable PC’s have not only advanced but changed in the last 5yrs alone – Google might be making a very smart decision with Chrome OS – eventhough the mobile and portable markets are seeming to be more and more relative and similar both in use and capability – they may not remain on the same path. I can see these two arenas of technology crossing paths but then, due to them being so identical – they make strides in different directions. If this were to happen in the foreseeable future Chrome OS will give google the ability to move in a direction to better suit potential changes in portable pc’s while Android remains a leader in the compact mobile market. This may seem redundant but I think it is naive to think that just because these two types of devices are so alike now, that they will remain this way 5 yrs from now, especially knowing where they came from. Cameras, Vehicle or Appliance interface’s, even integrated technology into clothing, watches and accessories are already in emerging in the buyers market, are we sure a PC OS will best fit these applications if they take off – or is Chrome OS a strong backup idea for the ever needed more business minded technology?

I like the idea of driving web development to new heights. That’s what Google is experimenting with in Chrome OS.

The words “levied” and “genesis” don’t seem to make much sense here. Did you mean “prognosis” for the latter? The “genesis” of Chrome OS has already happened, since it exists.

There is a need in enterprises for a high security, high manageability computer. As long as it is “good enough” to work with, such enterprises will buy it in quantity.
