Acer unveils its first 3D laptop

3D

Earlier this week, we wondered aloud why Acer might announce new tablets and a smartphone prior to naming said devices. Today, we have our answer. Behold… the Acer AS5745DG-A54E/L. If that name doesn’t stick in your head like a Britney Spears song, we don’t know what will. Unveiled Monday, Acer’s virgin 3D notebook features a 15.6-inch screen, an NVIDIA GeForce GT 425M GPU with NVIDIA’s 3D VISION at 120Hz, a 2.53GHz Intel Core i5-460M processor, 4GB of RAM, a 640GB hard drive, HDMI, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi b/g/n and a 1.3-megapixel webcam. It also ships with 3D VISION glasses, of course. Pricing hasn’t yet been announced, though Acer did say the AS5745DG-A54E/L will be available in Japan on December 3rd for “less than” 100,000 yen, which is roughly $1,200 US. Acer has not yet addressed availability outside of Japan.

Apple can’t beat those specs even at twice the price! Yes, Acer isn’t exactly a top-of-the-line company…but it is still better then Compaq and the like, and holds up quite well (we’ve had one in the family for 4 years now, with the only problem being a stubborn key – which we were able to fix).

Oh but wait…it’s not white with an Apple logo on it…that’s a deal breaker!

Honestly the deal breakers are only numbered by two:

      1. It is 3D (fad as far as home/work consumption goes)
      2. It runs Windows

Other than that I am sure it is quite the machine.

The price is just about right though. PC manufacturer have spent so much time worrying about price to extract market share that their profits have suffered greatly. Glad to see Acer try to earn a little bit for once.

I agree with the 3D being a fad part…but drawback because it runs Windows 7? Cmon man, have you even tried it? It’s amazing, no problems, and simply feature-packed. Forget Vista, MS was obviously just playing a joke with that OS. Windows 7 is a huge improvement over XP.

Listen Jarrett… I’m going to call you Jarrett.

You need a little background here.

3D, fad that it is, does have some upsides. In order to get a 3D experience, you need two images pushed to the screen at 60Hz, so when you see it, you know that the lcd screen operates at 120 Hz.

This is fantastic for a computer display for all uses, which is why some people still use CRT monitors and you can keep the 3D glasses in a drawer for the odd time that you’d be interested in seeing 3D.

Secondly, Windows has this wonderful advantage where it runs just about every program that’s been made in the past 15 years. Now that might not seem like a big deal, but for people who didn’t recently discover “apps” and the fact that computers could be put to work, this is the sine qua non of computers.

The other thing that WIndows does that everything else is useless at is hardware. Even Linux is behind the curve on this, although its gaining ground rapidly.

Somebody just invented the XYZ: there will be Windows drivers in a week, linux drivers in a month, and 2 years later Steve Jobs will announce a revolution in computing if you buy the highest specced Mac, unless of course he decides that you aren’t ready for it.

Lemme see here…. the whole article is about a new laptop with not even one mention of Apple on it and you had to run up and start ranting about Apple. So tell me does ranting like a buffoon about something nobody cares about make you feel like more of a macho man? Me and other bloggers really want to know.

      • sirpaul

Hahahaha, buffoon? Really? :) ) I was just making a price comparison, not ranting lol! There was no hate for Apple in that post. And it doesn’t make me feel like a “macho man” rofl, it’s just that I thought the comments section was for voicing your opinion! If not for opinions, what are they for? It’s not like I was off-topic…

If anything you are the one ranting :)

      • Anonymous

Not off topic???? The article is about 3D laptops from Acer and you come along with Apple. How can you be on topic? When was the last time Apple or its users even cared what Acer or anyone else put out on the laptop market? When was the last time Apple even tried to compete in desktop OS? They don’t and haven’t since they lost the OS wars to M$ over a decade ago. The majority of Apples desktop OS user base are Apple enthusiasts.

I can not wait to see people out in public establishments “frigin and fragin” with those cool glasses. I suppose all we can do is wait until the 3D fad passes. Come on holographic imagery.
