‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ shatters first day sales record

Gaming

When Activision released Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 last year, it set an all time record for launch day sales. The highly anticipated first person shooter sold 4.7 million copies in its first day of availability, amounting to $310 million in sales. Earlier this week, Activision released the latest title in the Call of Duty franchise and the gaming behemoth somehow managed to best itself. On launch day alone, 5.6 million copies of Call of Duty: Black Ops were sold in the U.S. and U.K., amounting to $360 million in retail sales. Activision said it was also on pace to break the $550 million five-day sales record it set last year with Modern Warfare 2. “The game’s success underscores the pop culture appeal of the brand,” Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick said in a statement. “Call of Duty: Black Ops is the finest game that Treyarch has ever made and raises the bar for online gameplay by delivering the deepest and most intense Call of Duty experience yet.”

As long as a game has a “Call of Duty” prefix, it will sell very well.

  • Steverl22

Selling it right now to a guy off Craigslist…IW version is so much better.

    • KidPhat

I couldn’t agree more with this comment. I’ll probably keep my copy but MW2 is way better, gameplay wise. The community features are nice though.

i think black ops multiplayer is so much better than mw2. its not as unbalanced as mw2 and they got rid of the cheap perks.most ppl who dont like black ops multiplayer are probably mad cause either A their perk combo is gone, B they can’t use kill streak rewards to get to the next reward and c cause shotguns and sniper riffles have been toned down. i say stop complaining and develop some skill

of course it did well…im one of the millions who bought it and shooting people from the hip is awesome… if you see the clan tag NYC, it may be me!! good times…

      What a loser.

Kiddie shooter with massive auto-aim so all the retards can actually hit stuff and almost Wii level graphics and barely functional online.

Way to go dipshit. It’s like some assclown bragging about buying the latest Michael Bolton album.

You obviously have no clue about the game, making u the loser. Don’t be upset because some people like to have fun. Now go listen to All By Myself with the lights off.

I haven’t played any of these games because I am not fond of 1st person games, does this support 3rd person?

I’m never played in 3rd person mode in Modern Warfare 2.

I preordered this and got it on the first day.

Got it for free for a contest at work. After playing it, there is no way I would actually spend $60 on a “decent” COD game. MW2 is so much better. Looks like my skepticism of another Treyarch COD was proved correct all along. It’s not terrible, but it’s not great.

Looking for forward to Homefront after the disappointments of MoH and Black Ops….. will probably be another disappointment but at least it gives me something to look forward to. At least if it’s good I will be pleasantly surprised…..

40 bucks with gamefly… i think 60 bucks is too much for any game, but hey what can you do…

      • Giorgio

Agreed. I was just referring to the generic retail pricing. This is definitely the kind of game that is worth buying used if you find a good deal.

  • Misterjcasanova

I bet it is “the finest game that Treyarch has ever made “. This does not mean it is the best COD edition ever. In all honesty it is a step down from MW2 and Medal of Honor.

    • Anonymous

A step down from Medal of Honor? Is that even possible?

    • MrAvenue

Did you honestly say Medal of Honor, that was by far one of the worst games I’ve ever played this year.

  • Drdanes1

I got it the first day and the truth is MW2 it’s ahead of this one. I recommend to try it before buying it so you don’t end up like me selling it the the third day.

  • Anonymous

I think MW2 is better. But the more I play this game the better it gets.

    • Anonymous

Its just different and takes getting used to like you say. The more you play it the more you like it. It has more customization and is just a better overall value.

  • Anonymous

Treyarch shatters my desire to buy any PC release of theirs ever again. I really want to like this game instead of yelling at it. Judging by the maps that I’ve seen, as well as the level of customization and new currency system: there’s just enough good that shines through the thickest of lag to make me want to not give up hope for a playable future for CoD: Black Ops PC.

  • Jluna3

Modern Warfare 2 is soooo much better than Black Ops.

    • Anonymous

      No.

MW2 is not better than this game. They are different. I can tell you this. The Single Player Campaign is by far the best I have ever played in a CoD game. Yes that includes MW2. BlackOps SP campaign is SICK! Great great storyline and visuals.

Now on to MP. Treyarchs game is more colorful and slower in pace. I like this and welcome it. MW2 is unbalanced and FULL of campers. There is no nuke or ridiculous other camp tempting killstreaks in BlackOps therefore I prefer it.

Overall I would say I prefer BO better. Favorite maps on MP are Summit, Jungle, FireRange and Grid. Nuke Town is garbage. That is all.

    • mac11

i totally agree with you on that. mp is black ops is way better now that its balanced and ppl can’t exploit over powered perks and cheap kill streaks

    • Salim

Nuke Town is the wost map ever in an online FPS. What were they thinking???

  • MrAvenue

I think that to compare MW2 and BOps is hard to do, for one they are made by different developers, and secondly they are both based in different time periods. As for the general rating of the game, I feel that the single player was very well done, and as for the multiplayer, it’s just different than MW2. I personally feel it’s a little slower, and much less shoot run shoot. As for the leveling up factor, I found it to be a bit short. Only 50 levels does not do much for me, that’s where MW2 shone, with 70 levels. All in all, I like the game, but I feel it takes a different type of player, but that’s also what you get when you have different developers. Same thing goes with Halo: Reach; different type of game, further away from its ancestry than people are used to. If you don’t enjoy it, go back and play MW2, I’m sure there are many people still playing that as well. Cheers.

    LaffinAtHaters GT on XBox Live.

Would love to play it, but game freezes..after I re-imaged PC, reloaded all latest/greatest drivers, etc. Guess I’ll have to wait for a patch.

I am severely underwhelmed by Black Ops, but that has been the case for every Treyarch Call of Duty title. They need to break out of their single-player model so that I don’t have an infinite number of enemies coming at me until I reach the arbitrary checkpoint spot. I completed half a level by just running straight to the next checkpoint without shooting any bad guys. I would get to the checkpoint, get killed, restart from that point and repeat. The storyline is god awful. It’s like trying to do Assassin’s Creed meets CoD. The graphics are mediocre. Some parts have decent spots and some have graphics that the Hitman series surpassed in 2005.

The multiplayer is average. They promised us that we wouldn’t have to follow the daggone levelling path to unlock weapons. But, sure enough, you have to level to get the best weapons. You don’t get to just make money and buy them. You have to wait until they are unlocked at a particular level and then buy them. Nice double-tap, Treyarch. I do enjoy the wager matches, but the regular modes are just run-and-gun. I think they are worse than MW2 in that respect because most of the maps are way too small. Jungle is supposed to be one of the largest and it only takes 30 seconds to cross from one corner to the opposite one. The mechanics are mostly balanced, but I do see modded boxes still giving advantages. I have seen several players skipping across the screen. Heck, I got disgusted last night because I crept up on one camper and just as I swung my knife, he completely disappeared to the next building. I am running 15mbps with 35+ fps. Tell me that is not modded?!

I got bored with it last night and went back to finish off some missions on Fable III last night. Frankly, I may be done with the CoD series without IW. Bad Company series is the pinnacle of 1st person shooters. Until everyone gets destructible environments, no point in playing.
