Apple unloads 250,000 Apple TV units in first six weeks

General

It might not have launched with a new name or an App Store as rumors suggested, but Apple’s refreshed set top box still managed to find its way into plenty of living rooms following its launch last month. The new iOS-powered Apple TV became available in early September and according to Apple’s earnings call this past Monday, the company has sold over 250,000 units in the six weeks since its release. It looks like Apple TV isn’t such a bad hobby after all. Unlike less popular Apple TV models of generations past, the new Apple TV is very affordable at $99. It also offers TV show rentals for just 99 cents, HD movie rentals for as little as $3.99, and it supports Netflix’s Watch Instantly streaming video service. Firm rumors that the media box will soon have access to third-party apps persist, so it will be interesting to see if the introduction of an App Store will increase Apple TV’s already impressive sales pace.

Another worthless Apple product that everyone hates but does so well. BTW I love it

I’m good with my early09 Mac mini

Its “better” then previous only in software form, but hardware, this isnt as sweet or sexy looking.

Ill keep my older Roku since its awesome…And my TiVo Premier because it does the same thing and that box I got for free.

I need to make this my next purchase.. anyone using? What are your thoughts?

    • Carmen

It’s super-easy to use. The Netflix experience blows their own website and apps out of the water.

I agree 100%, Netflix on my Apple TV is way better than on my Samsung blu-ray player. I no longer have to search the internet with my laptop for putting movies on my instant watch list. What’s really cool is my wife and I have our own controllers (iPhones).

meh, I offload ~250,000 liters every day

Must be the price, I mean $99? That’s pretty cheap coming from Apple. Maybe it’ll pick one up when they put the App Store in it.

Thats what im thinkn it is. I personally think Apple makes nice products & the $99 price point is sure to appeal to alot of people. The device is just useless to me however when i have a Windows desktop, iPad, PS3, & Android phone. theres nothing i can do with that box that i cant do with one or more of the devices that i already own & i convinced 3 other people the same thing. Nice product/price but for most it would be like carrying a smartphone & a palm pilot. I think that most house holds that dont have at least one device with most of its capabilities probably isnt tech savy enough to care about it or actually know what theyre getting if they buy it anyway

    zzzzzzzz
who the hell pays 99c to watch a tv episode ?
    idiots
    well
    enjoy idiots

    • Eric S

Is it better to pay 70+ bucks a month for 400 channels that you can’t possibly all watch?

(and no, I don’t have an Apple TV.)

      • NEO

But Apple only has deals to rent from 2 networks.

        And what about live events?

And what about multiple TVs in the home?

And what about triple play from cable?

  • Norm

YAWN!!!!! I’ll take DROID TV anyway.

    • Peter

      LOL look at this loser.

  • John

I’m not sure those are such great numbers. Microsoft sold about double as many Xbox 360s in September alone and the 360 has been out for five years. To compete on the home media front, Apple will have to pull off way better sales than this.

  • SuckaBorn

250,000 people are really dumb. (And counting..)

  • Jim Davis

There are tons of media player devices that are just as cheap and do just as much. I guess some people will buy anything with an apple logo on it.

  • Erik

For only 100 bucks i think ill jump on board. Stream my colbert report to my big screen :)

  • Keymaker

I’m getting one for a few reason, 1st Apple has tons of developers waiting to develop for this thing. 2nd, netflix support. 3rd, airplay support.

    • NEO

I wouldn’t count netflix as one of the reasons simply because you can get it on just about every kind of set top box out there.

  • serpentor

    Welcome to BGR Zach.

When did they get rid of the other guys?

    • serpentor

And again, this should also be filed under “stuff no one gives a fck about”

  • Sachin

Waiting for this to happen in India.

  • patrick

My bluray player streams netflix. Preordered Logitech Revue. Much large capabilities. Itv way to minimal for me. I can plug in my macbookpro and do more.

  • Douglas

I received mine last night. I had it setup and working within 15 minutes (including linking it to 2 MacBooks via Home Sharing). Like many Apple products, it really has a wow factor that can’t be fully experienced by reading about it. Sure, I knew what functionality it offered. I am replacing an older Apple TV. So, I was fully aware of the advantages/disadvantages of the old vs. new models. But even so, it still wowed me a bit when I experienced it first hand.

  • HunterA3

I guess PT Barnum was right. There’s a sucker born every minute. Apple clearly under delivered and overpriced the AppleTV compared to Roku, but 250,000 went out the door.

  • Graham

I replaced an older AppleTV as I had no device capable of Netflix attached to my TV. Setup is very easy. Netflix works great. Photo has more screensaver options – but cannot get it to stream a wide variety of photos from mac yet? There is a lot of room in that top menu for new channels or services – now 4 versus previous 6 on older AppleTV
