Google launches video chat enhancements labs feature for Gmail

Search giant Google has announced a new labs feature for their Gmail web-based email client called “video chat enhancements.” As Google explains:

Visit the Gmail Labs tab under Settings, turn on “Video chat enhancements,” and right away, you’ll see higher resolution video and a bigger video chat window.The higher resolution video uses a new playback mechanism which enables widescreen VGA and frees up valuable resources on your computer. For it to work, both you and the person you’re chatting with will need to have the lab turned on.

        Well he has a point, albeit disguised in an unruly post. Using faces of people that are more attractive or appealing is an basic marketing strategy.

        You wont see a BMW commercial where the driver has teeth so bad that he could eat an apple through a tennis racket.

    Is there a technology to use Google (Gmail) video-chat without any download? Maybe Java, Flash?

    Microsoft research originally implemented similar technology few months before (sorry, can’t find the link). The difference is Microsoft used low resolution image to reconstruct higher resolution still image, not video frames. This looks exactly as the next logical step of the same technology: reconstruct missing details using adjacent frames in video stream.

      That’s really cool, I hadn’t heard about that. It makes sense since video compression is determining the areas from frame to frame that have changed and building off of keyframes new views. That could definitely make substantial improvements if able to be done in real-time to minimize ghosting and improve other noise annoyances from the compression. Very cool.

    We tried it and noticed a distinct difference right away. Just a larger opening screen was enough. Yet to try it with the mother-out-law in France. You try explaining to her how to enable the feature – over the phone!
