Redbox is reportedly exploring possibilites to expand its movie rental service beyond kiosks and onto the Internet. According to Redbox President Mitch Lowe, Redbox is considering a web service to to expand the availability of its 100,000 movie catalog and to make it easier for consumers to access its service. Initial details are not expected to be unveiled until October but the movie rental company could benefit from a strong online offering. With Blockbuster on the decline and interest in online streaming exploding, Redbox has an opportunity to grab some market share before the field gets over-crowded.

Why? Everyone knows physical blue-ray discs are where it’s at.

why? not everyone is wanting to have to have hardware lying around everywhere, surely being able to download the item and then play through the tv or put onto a portable device like a phone is what people are wanting now, its why companies offer free digital copy with dvd/blue rays

    Frankly your an idiot.

This will be a good idea if they can offer NEW movies for instant streaming.

Last time I tried, they couldn’t even make picking up your movie (that you order from their website) an easy process. Have they heard of supplying a pickup code?

Netflix streaming blows – they have only limited movies via streaming and it is usually old crap you don;t want to watch.

Redbox please do it right and make the current movies available to stream – to xbox/PS3 or mobile device (android/iPhone)

Netflix has been in business for 12 years. If they can’t get decent streaming titles… what makes you think RedBox will?

BTW… movie studios HATE RedBox. Notice how you have to wait 28 days to get some new releases from RedBox. That’s because they feel like RedBox is undercutting their business. They’re not friends.

Its about time Redbox put up Blueray moives in their kiosks. I do not know why they are so slow to do it. Almost every one now can buy a Blueray player as they are so affordable now.

    • SKINNI

Yea i agree. Or at least have the most popular releases on BR

More competition online is a good thing. And that guy needs to hit the gym at night, not sit around and watch movies.

  • Ryan

This would be the only way i would go back to using Redbox, its a crapshoot whether you get a disc that can be player or has been used as a coaster.

If REDBOX does offer streaming online I’m sure they will probably charge more that Netflix if they are allowed to stream new movies. I can’t believe people complain about Netflix. You can watch unlimited streaming movies/shows for 9/month, what’s there to complain about? Why would any company have new movies streaming unlimitedly at such a low price? They wouldn’t make money. And you can still get new movies sent to you, and if you don’t want to wait there’s always Redbox and Blockbuster (for now.)

I mean $9 a month is pretty much nothing compared to what video stores use to charge a few years back. So I see it as a steal Netflix. I mean you get to stream basically anything you want plus rent via snail mail (well, with the list of movies they have streaming that is) Streaming will get better in time. I mean with how technology and how deals are made lightning quick anymore. We will have Blueray’s streaming with in years with everyone having T1 internet speeds (or close to it) as the standard. Redbox is just playing catch-up and they will be there soon enough.
