Opera Mini 5.1 for Android released
Oslo, Norway — July 14, 2010

Opera spreads the love to Android mobile phone users. Opera Mini 5.1 is now available for phones built on the Android platform, offering better browsing performance and improved user experience.

With over 61 million users worldwide, Opera Mini is the world’s most popular browser for mobile phones, allowing much faster browsing speeds, while keeping the costs to a minimum. Browse at lightning speed today by downloading the free Opera Mini browser from the Android Market or at m.opera.com.

Opera Mini is a favorite not just on feature phones, but also on smartphones, scoring an impressive 1 million downloads on the iPhone during the first 24 hours of availability. Opera Mini is highly optimized for almost any handset, delivering the best Internet experience on more than 3000 mobile phone models.

Opera Mini raises the game on Android phones. Since its Opera Mini 5 beta release, Opera Mini can now be set as the default browser for more convenient Internet access. Opera Mini 5.1 also offers improved page layout on high-end Android handsets with large screens.

What we say

“Opera Mini 5.1 for the Android platform is the next step in bringing the world’s most popular mobile web browser to all major platforms, offering improved performance and great web experience to almost any handset,” says Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “Opera Mini is used by over 61 million people on more than 3000 handset models and with today’s release Opera continues its mission to provide the best web experience on any device and on any platform.”

About Opera Mini

Opera Mini brings the Web to almost any handset by compressing data by up to 90 percent before sending content to the phone. This results in significantly improved page loading speed and reduced data costs for the user. For example, with webpages such as BBC.com, a normal mobile web browser will display a BBC News page roughly 1 time, as compared to 9 times with Opera Mini for the same cost.

In addition to providing speed and cost savings, Opera Mini 5.1 comes with useful features, such as tabbed browsing, password manager, bookmarks and Speed Dial, built into the browser to deliver easy web access while on-the-go. With Opera Mini optimized for Android phones, more people are able to get a PC-like browsing experience on their handsets.

Download Opera Mini directly to your Android phone for free from the Android Market, or at m.opera.com. For more information, visit http://www.opera.com/mobile/.

You can’t just call junk and not give a reason.

What makes this better than the stock browser?

    • red014

If you want a browser without flash that doesn’t allow you to zoom however you want, and renders pages less than perfectly, it’s better in every way.

I think the big advantage is data compression if you’re not on an unlimited plan.

@red014 – Did you get the Skfyire update yesterday? Just updated yesterday with data compression and Flash support.

Lovely look and feel from this browser and a lot.of.nice features, but it seems very slow compared with my stock Sense UI Browser.

    Is that just me?

    • kftgr

Hmm, what sites? Because it loads pages faster for me than the default browser.

Besides, love love love the tab management on this vs webkit.

I will have to try it out, besides its free.

I just tried this, total crap. Its still to slow.

This was super fast on my Droid(the last version was slow). Only needs real pinch zoom and a flash plugin and it will be perfect. Would be nice if we coud import bookmarks as well.

i was using 5.0 beta version, the fonts were much nicer. for me the have sacraficed readabilty for the sake of speed. Wish had not of upgraded to 5.1

  • mingkee

Having it installed on my nexus one. I wish it had adobe flash support like opera mobile.

Opera was fine for BB MORONS who didn’t have anything better. As for Android, I’ll pass. Stock is fine. I’m sure this will still get use in BB OS 6 though since that is still from 1993.

    • mingkee

I have opera mobile (not that simplified “mini”) installed on my HD2 and N900 and it’s nice.
Opera, please release opera mobile for Android, not this version for regular phones.

Opera is generally faster at rendering pages than the stock browser on my Samsung Moment due to the server-side compression. However, it clearly is designed for displaying static information and not functioning in an interactive way as many websites, including mobile websites are designed.

Anything that Opera can do to improve interactive functions while maintaining the relative quickness will make me happy.

Although I don’t use Opera as my daily browser, I find that it fills a nitch when the stock browser is overburdened by a heavy-content, non-mobile site.

Where is the pinch to zoom you mention cause it sure doesn’t work on my Droid? I can’t even double tap to zoom in.

    • kftgr

      Works on my Evo.

Seems like pinch is just another way to double tap, though, as there’s only 2 zoom levels.

  • jimf

tried it…doesnt work with mutitouch to zoom in … I uninstalled.

Let’s hope they fixed the issue where columns of text are preshrunk when you’re in the zoomed out view.

  • Brad

Um, yeah, send all my browsing traffic through a central proxy server, which creates not only a single point of failure, but also a potential privacy nightmare? Um, pass. xScope is my browser of choice, and works very well.
