Apple iPhone 4 plagued by 3G data connectivity issues?

Rumor

iPhone4-3G-data-issue

A voluminous thread on Apple’s support forums seems to suggest that a growing number of iPhone 4 users are experiencing problems with 3G connectivity. According to the reports, folks with an iPhone 4 are experiencing slow or even non-existent 3G connectivity in areas where 3G signal is present. The problem is not solely due to AT&T as a side-by-side comparison with an iPhone 3G or 3GS reveals that the iPhone 3G/3GS has a solid 3G connection while the iPhone 4 is on EDGE or is crawling along at less than 30 kbps on a supposed 3G connection. For some folks, the issue is intermittent with periods of good connectivity followed by periods of poor connectivity. If anyone else notices this unusual phenomenon, give us a shout in the comments with your experiences.

Thanks, Matt, Chris, and Rob!

I also have an iphone, my issue, which also is all over threads is having full bars and being on the 3G network, but not being able to send or receive text message and calls. I have switched out my SIM for a new one, restored the phone, and still nothing.
The worst part is is no one is taking accoutability for this issue, Apple bounces me back to ATT and ATT bounces me back to Apple.
I don’t know what the issue is exactly but I would really like it if one of this multimillion dollar corps would step up and take care of it.

On my iPhone 4 I sometimes can’t connect at all for phone calls or text messages – happening more and more frequently; even more frequently calls will drop, and repeatedly on successive attempts. Sometimes my phone will show No Service while sitting in the same place where it showed 3G with multiple bars only a few minutes prior or after. Apple store guy reset the SIM, said he thought that would fix it, but it didn’t. I tried disabling 3G and had a little better luck with frequency of connections, but still have intermittent connectivity problems and calls dropping with a frequency that is unacceptable. I don’t think AT&T is to blame because I also have a Blackberry on the AT&T (Edge) network. I switch to it every time I have a problem connecting with my iPhone (whether with 3G enabled or disabled), and the Blackberry ALWAYS connects and NEVER drops calls – from all the very same places my iPhone has issues. iPhone is a great WiFi gadget, but a pitiful phone.

I am still having this problem. Iphone 4 on 3g crawls, swith to Edge it works fine. Had a 3GS phone right next to it and it works fine on 3G. AT&T says no issues with them. Apple replaced the phone once and says it is the AT&T network. Still have the same problem but can’t find a solution. HELP!!

All fucking month. What the hell apple, you sacks of shit. Do what I pay you out the ass to do.

Intermittent would be a compliment, compared to the nonexistence of 3G for 80% of my day. I use exclusively in Austin and Dallas Texas, both equally signal-void.

I’m having this exact issue. I had a LG enV Touch and finally switched to the Verizon white iPhone 4 (32 gb). Now when I’m at work, in a place that I always had a fair (but not great) 3G signal with the enV Touch, I won’t even be able to detect it for hours at a time with the iPhone! It’s very frustrating since I dropped my carrier’s texting plan to use TextFree – which needs 3G! I also have long stretches of downtime at this job – it’s a night shift – so I can’t take advantage of that time now to communicate with my wife. Grrr

I have an iphone 4 for about 5 months now and for the past month or so my phone has been on EDGE.

I am having similar issues with the exception that when I leave wifi connectivity, after a short period of time it will not connect to 3G.  This has happened 4 or 5 times since I bought the 4S last Friday.  When I do a soft reset, 3G will work, until I get back on wifi and then we go through the same cycle.  At&t referred me to Apple, Apple referred me back to At&t.
