Skype is going World Cup crazy by offering a promotion to help football fans the world over stay connected. Offering free landline calls in multiple countries (more on that in a second), U.S. residents will get a bit of extra love with free mobile calling for a month. Thirty countries are included in the promotion, and depending upon which country you call you will receive 60, 120, or unlimited free minutes of calling, so be sure to check out Skype’s blog for the full details.

That’s great but the fact that I’m in Europe and I can’t use the skype app on my Tour because I get an error that says the app can only be used in the U.S. blows..

lame, it’s really a 30 day trial for their service. Skype hoping some people don’t read the fine print and forget to cancel at the end of 30 days…

Just give every skype user free calling without this credit card/paypal nonsense, sheesh!

Once again, Canada is left out :/

Err, I don’t think Canada’s in the World Cup, eh?

Go figure…. I’ve been using Skype on my system for a long time now…. but as usual only US residents get any attention, and those of us here in Canada get ignored again…… you’d think that the US was the center of the world.

(gah! no edit button…..) and no, I’m NOT anti-American…. considering how I’m Canadian/American

I suspect that this promo is being done for the same reason that the first “free calling” Skype was done: To improve U.S. market penetration.

Outside the U.S. there seems to be broader awareness/usage of Skype, but domestically I’m still amazed at the number of people who have never heard of Skype, let alone used it.

It’s BS the relationship Verizon Wireless has with Skype and I don’t understand why Microsoft doesn’t apply some serious heat on Skype and lock Windows out from using Skype; maybe then they’ll understand it’s not cool to lie to Windows Mobile users why their shut out unless they know exactly where to find the old 3.0 cab file which continues to this day to work on these devices.
