Sony’s first VAIO P was a was quite a disappointment considering how poorly it performed and the huge price tag it carried, but Sony seems to be confident that its second-gen VAIO P will right the wrongs of the past. Shipping one week ahead of schedule, the “Lifestyle PC” comes pre-loaded with Windows 7 Home Premium and has an Intel Atom Z530 processor and 2GB of RAM to help keep things flowing. Apart from that, the $900 rig has a 8″ 1600×768 display that’s straddled by optical trackpads, Everywair 3G, GPS, digital compass and an accelerometer. Of course if you lived elsewhere you’d have a lot more options than that to chose from, but who needs that much stress in their life?

These are still way overpriced. I can’t imagine choosing one of these over and iPad, or an Asus netbook, of which I have both of these products, and my iPad blows away the performance of the Asus netbook. I know Sony products carry a premium, but these seem more like style accessories than useful machines.

Come on Sony, offer us a tablet at a price that competes with the iPad and more people will be interested. According to reports, Apple has been selling 1.2 million iPads a month. Is your Sony VAIO P pulling anywhere near those numbers?

900 bones for a netbook? WTF.

Vaio P can definitely reach 1.2M in unit sales. (This is not a bold statement, look how I excluded the time period)

    You lost me at $900…

I still regret buying a Vaio 13″ laptop. I have had it for nearly 2 years and its a piece of expensive slow machine. It takes forever to bootup and close down because of the crap Sony puts into it. I have a 10 year old Gateway 15″ which the Vaio replaced and the Gateway is by far a better laptop.

Then your Sony doesn’t suck because you just need to reinstall the OS to same state as your Gateway, or uninstall the Sony-bloatware.

I’ve had my Sony S for 6 years and it’s worked okay in XP until I upgraded to the recent Z11.

Now the Z11 is a daemon.

Love my Vaio laptop… its a 17 incher, so its heavy… but overall a good experience. But I wouldn’t pay $900 for a beefy netbook. For that price, you could get the same laptop I have w/ Blu-ray and HDMI out *0R* that nice little Alienware ‘netbook’!!

“Come on Sony, offer us a tablet at a price that competes with the iPad ”
No, FAIL… if every company tried to get into the tablet game, there’s going to end up being a lot… a ton… of crapware and failures. Just because Apple has a successful tablet, doesn’t mean every single company has to try to come out with a tablet too. To put it another way: The iPad is popular, the IPAD… not necessarily tablets in general. Once some Android slates drop, we might see a competitor to the ipad, but I don’t think those will even sell as much as the ipads. I think we’re going to see a division where you’ll have Ipads, Android slates… then everything else. I personally do not want or need any type of slate. Honestly, if slates are so popular that Sony needs to get in the game, then why don’t I see more people trolling around with an Archos?

Even Dell Streak beats this in feature-set and price, for this size.

How can you compare this to an iPad? They’re different classes of device. That’s like comparing a moped with a SmartCar.

Not all of us want to type on a non-tactile keyboard, viewing the screen flat on the table, full of glorious reflections. The Sony, while pricey, is an amazing piece of tech with a usable keyboard that will actually run all my existing apps. Some of us do more than surf and try to look cool in Starbucks with our glossy iDevice of the day. Some want to run real applications and, heaven forbid, maybe plug in a USB device!

I like my vaio P, but yes it is indeed powerless. I ran XP on it and was satisfied with the performance just a tad unstable. Vista was the biggest mistake; win 7 was an improvement from vista. To say the least, sony needs to brings back the Vaio TT. Back in 2008 TT was pushing 1.6 core duo, 8GB, 256 SSD, Blu ray, on the perfect 11.1 inch screen.
I’m still tweaking the P but am aware i’m only fighting a loosing battle. The ideal P would be 9 inch with I-core, 8GB ram, 2GB of dedicated video ram, 512 SSD,- Lets call it the Vaio PZero I’ll pay $2000) Heat dissipation is the only issue in my opinion; but can be resolved with venting between the keys, vents on the sides and rear, with intake ducts to allow for more air flow. opinions?
