AT&T gives the iPhone 3GS a price cut

iphone-3gs-trio

Maybe your current iPhone is falling apart at the seams or perhaps something about the iPhone 4 just rubs you the wrong way, we don’t know, but in case you’re desperate to get a new iPhone today, AT&T has announced it has cut the contract price of both the 16 and 32GB models. The 16GB model now goes for $149 while the 32GB goes for $199. It’s probably not the most wise decision to grab one considering what’s going down in 18 days, but this is definitely your last shot at getting a 3GS before it gets its capacity neutered down to a measly 8GB.

Why not go to Walmart and get the same phone for $97

    • DJ Megatron

The one I work for only had a few and they were gone before I left work at 4pm the day they announced the price cut.

      • Victor

        Try finding one. You wont.

  • guy

if you can find a walmart that has them in stock…

  • murph

any idea what the off contract price is? i need a replacement, but i don’t want to lock myself into 2 more years of ATT hell. headed to Android as soon as I can.

  • Zobop

Yea picked one up at Walmart on Sunday for $97. Got in on unlimited data before it was gone

    • Adam

Unlimited data is no longer gone, FWY.

      • Adam

        FYI*

      • Bob

what do you mean its no longer gone?

      • DJ Megatron

If you were already under contract you can be grandfathered in when you upgrade. BUT if you want the $20 tethering you have to go with either the $15 200MB or $25 2GB data plans. Luckily I have been under contract for 18 months already and plan to keep the $30 Unlimited Data plan.

  • Ag

I think we all saw this comming but not at this price I wonder what are they trying to do?

  • Moonbaseone

Quick Question., If you have the Unlimited data plan right now and say, have it for Blackberry, but may be switching to another platform in the future, can you still keep your unlimited Data plan?

    • apple_

Yes. I spoke with the area rep. as long as you don’t ever move to the 2GB plan, you can keep it even if you upgrade, go from Blackberry to iPhone etc.

Be very careful upgrading at walmart. They jack peoples plans up ALL the time. I work in a call center, I see it EVERY day.

Call AT&T the minute you leave ANYwhere that upgrades to double check your plan.

      • Moonbaseone

Thanks. I do have a Blackberry, but if the 9800 Slider and OS6 doesn’t impress me, I will look to the iPhone(doubtful but the new one looks nice), or a Android(whenever they get a decent one).

      • SAL

If you upgrade, then you can not keep your $30 unlimited plan and you can not go back to it. Then 2g plan is a joke.

      • Victor

Really? A joke huh? I consider myself a heavy phone user and I stream pandora or iheartradio anytime I’m in the car and I get all my email on my phone, a lot of them with attachments. My data usage on average is just under 1GB. I’m not saying I use my phone more than anyone here, but I know I probably use it as much as the next person. Its the warm and fuzzy feeling the word “unlimited” gives people. That’s it. Sprint has made a killing off of it. Slamming people who would otherwise be fine in a 500 minute plan for about $40/mo. into an “Unlimited” plan for about $70/mo. People are just to lazy to look into what their usage actually is and make an educated decision that way. It’s the “more or bigger is better” mentality everyone has. If you are using a little over 2gigs a month, cut back a little and save $5/mo. If you happen to go over a month here or there, you pay a flat $10 for going over. How is that so bad? How is that a joke? Take a minute and look at your usage, att even made it easy *DATA# and send. I guarantee most will be surprised at what they find. I do it on a daily basis, show customers what their actual data usage is on their devices and when they see they can save money on their bill instead of overpaying for “unlimited” they are happy.

  • Raphael

Hey murph it’s non-contract price is $699 but I can sell you mine for $350 that’s half the price.
P.S. I have two so if anyone else wants one

  • zack

It’s ridiculous to buy the 3GS for $99 when the iPhone 4 will be $199. That $100 is going to seem like pocket change after paying a year of monthly fees, so why not get the latest and greatest?

  • Sally

Using an iphone is like signing up with AOL to use the INTERNET. Yes, big daddy will protect you. We’ll tell you what you can receive
    .
Android is the WWW wide open!

    • PorkPie

Yeah! Android has nothing to do with this post, but I’m pissed that Verizon got my money for a wonky, high-maintenance crapshoot that can’t even do voice and data at the same time, so I’m going to troll like I’m living in mommy’s basement!

For christ’s sake. If you don’t like the iPhone, don’t read the posts! iPhone users don’t go to android threads and point out how difficult it is to sync local content to the phone.

      • PorkPie

The web on the iPhone is unrestricted. It’s not fully supported, but I guess if you wanted those slutty “local singles chat” flash ads, then I guess android is the way to go.

      • C. Bess

        Nice. I concur.

  • Sally

iphone is for old people, 55 and older
Android is for the fun crowd

    • Ludwigdrums

If you think that fun crowd = hardcore tech geeks then yes I would say so.

      Average consumer? Not so much

    • Chut Pata

iPhone is from Apple, and all Apple products are for non-technies who just want to use a product without being a technicians. They are willing to pay extra for that. Android is from Google, and Google products are for people who are not ready to pay one single cent unless they have to. They are technies who want to control the product, not be controlled by the product. There should be no competition between Android and Apple, they represent two different tastes like Apple vs Microsoft.

    • JMac

That has got to be about the dumbest thing I have ever heard anyone say. Your a tool! A lot of my friends have Iphones and we are not in our 50′s D-bag.

  • http://yahoo franky

listen everyone stop crying about what phone to get just because others tell you. If u like get, if you don’t then don’t, but stop nagging, if your not sure on your own decisions then what the heck is your brain for chop liver

  • neo

so no Iphone for verizon ha ha

    • Norm

Did you really think Apple would waste time and money on a dead technology that is CDMA?

  • lechero

To clarify, unlimited is no longer available, for those of you with unlimited plans looking to switch to iphone, not happening, 2 different plans, att lists them in their system as pda unlt and iphone data unlimited so there is no grandfathering from say a blackberry to new iphone.

  • http://www.corp.att.com/history/milestones.html Mark

Thanks for staying upbeat!!! You stay Classy BGR…. you worthless blog

    • lechero

      and yet you ready it.

  • nick

    I bought a 3gs today… so I’ll just exchange it for an iPhone 4 since I’ll be within my 30 days! :)

    Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).

    • Victor

You can as long as you didn’t pay the $149 close out price. If you paid $199 you are able to exchange it for a different phone (iPhone 4) when it comes out. That $149 price basically locks you into that phone and only that phone. If there is something wrong with it, they will change it our for another one of the same, within you’re 30 days.

    • Marika

Can you really do that? cause i wanna do the same!!

  • MobilePorn

I get a kick out of Steve Jobs saying if you want Porn, get an Android. Guess he doesn’t know how many iPhone Porn sites there are. There’s tons of iPhone specific Porn sites (that don’t work on other Mobile Phones!).
Truth is, Steve Jobs wacks off to porn on his iPhone all the time. He just doesn’t want anyone else to enjoy it like he does. It’s MAGICAL, you know!

  • Kirk

Man, what’s up with BGR? Boy Genius used to suck the last drop of Steve Job’s man juice with every Apple announcement. What’s the matter? Did he leave you for another man?

    • C. Bess

I’m guessing you are eager about this because you enjoy watching more than I care to read about.

  • Genius907

The new tiered data plans are for all smartphones. Contrary to what one person said, if you switch from any other smartphone, say a blackberry, to an iPhone, you will not lose your unlimited data plan. It’s completely grandfathered. The only way you lose it is if you ask for the switch or opt for tethering. That being said, always double check with the rep you’re working with to make sure. If you’re in a store, make sure they go over that customer service summary.

And on that note, 30 days is 30 days. Just because you buy an iPhone at the closeout price doesn’t mean you can’t exchange within 30 days. One of the only times I’ve seen AT&T do that is when they were selling refurbished iPhones in there corporate stores. If you’re being told differently, escalate that until you get the right person. I’ve seem no documentation saying if you get a 3gs now that you’re locked into it.

Some people are so quick to bash the ‘death star’ they don’t even take the time to do a little research.

    • http://www.corp.att.com/history/milestones.html Mark

As of the June 7th price change, the iPhone 3GS 16 and 32 GB are on closeout which means they cannot be exchanged as we will only be carrying the iPhone 3GS 8 GB and iPhone 4 going forward. Anyone that tells you otherwise is not telling the truth. The only way to return a 3GS 16 or 32 after June 7th is to cancel your line and go to another carrier. This is from corporate and cannot be bypassed.

  • rubeea

i have contract with ATT and im thinkin to buy 32gb 3GS since i need more space so do u suggest i should buy it or wait for 4g ???? thnx

  • Tom bourn

My wife was led to believe she could switch it out 149 gs within 30 days guy even quoted 15 restock fee. She was allowed to order an iPhone 4 for 299 She is going to AT&T tonight to get clarification from Manager. All she did was go into AT&T to switch a line cause old iPhone was acting up. I’ll let you know how it goes
