Skype 2.0 iPhone

Skype has just released software version 2.0.0 for Apple’s iPhone via an App Store update. Improvements listed for the new version include:

  • Call using your 3G connection. Skype-to-Skype calls on 3G are free until at least end of August 2010, after which there will be a small monthly fee (operator charges for data will still apply).
  • Near CD-quality sound for Skype-to-Skype calls using wideband audio (SILK codec) on iPhone 3GS and 2nd generation iPhone touch.
  • Enhanced call quality indicator.
  • Improved start-up time.
  • Fast access to the dial pad from iPhone home screen.

We’re a little confused as to what the “small monthly fee” for Skype-to-Skype 3G calls is all about but there you have it.

No Bluetooth support, a very big miss for a 2.0 version.

Sorry, I’m already busy with your mother.

A worthy thought for sure, but it may cause them to multiply .

Anyway this particular one sounds more like Skype is taking aand that would not be good at all monthly chunck of change from AT&T.

I have a feeling that this will become the norm for future releases of Skype on cell phones.

I wonder how small the small monthly charge will start at/will become.

Landline calling works for me from GPRS (not even EDGE!!). I have often found the call quality with skype to be significantly better than normal calling over O2′s voice network here in the UK

    What’s an iPhone?

Skype 3G calls are still free on Windows Mobile. Probably another reason Skype stop distributing it.

    Hey Skype!
Thanks but no thanks. I don’t need your service that bad. On the other hand, I’m sure you’ll be successful in finding some suckers to pay for your overrated service.

I have the app on my iPhone and I never used it anyway. No big deal for me, but, I do use it for video calls on my Mac.

You can make video calls from your raincoat?

I hate to make the typical comment, but I have been doing this on my old WinMo phone for a LONG time. Food for thought.

This must eat heavily into your data plan. That can be the only reason Service Providers would support this.

Google voice would be better than skype anyday

    Agreed^

I’m confused… why would Skype over 3G be a paid service come August?

I’m already paying for unlimited data. Is Skype kicking back some cash to the carrier? Why should the transport matter?

    • rederikus

No, the carrier will be kicking YOUR cash back to Skype.

    Haha…Google Voice ftw

Real benefit is, international roaming. Skype uses about 220k per min. So, it is about 20% or less of international roaming rates for direct dialed calls. Not bad.

Oh but wait, verizon has exclusivity on skype….NOT At&t is slappin their big red weenie up against the verizon fanboys head. Ha

Yesterday I successfully called family in the southern hemisphere on their landlines for next to nothing using Skype on the iPhone.

I was pleasantly surprised at the quality and ease of use.
I’ve used skype many times before but usually was restricted to my room ofthe nearest wifi access point.

The skype subscriptions that will follow will only be a few dollars a month and could work out quite cheap if you use it often like I will.

Following up on this I found a GPRS connection just isn’t sufficient so I called o2 and found they have a international travellers service which gives you near Skype prices to some countries (south Africa and Italy are the two I was interrested in) for £3 addon to your contract.

It’s not something they really advertise but a friendly call centre assistant can help you out.

Really a cool app, using this app on my iPhone as well… Thanx for the info dude… :)

Skype unlimited plus an unlimited international iPhone data plans means for about $75/mo I can call most anywhere in the world from anywhere in the world (civilized world anyway) for free. I can drop to the lowest voice plan and don’t need the discounted roaming plans. Great for me (not so sure about AT&T).
