Seriously Dell? The UK first? That hurts.

Sad irony is that by the time this thing finally launches in the US, the only selling point it’ll have left is the 5-inch screen. If it’s still packing a 1 GHz, 65 nm Snapdragon, it’ll be tired tech.

lolwut? Sounds more like its been designed to go obsolete before its even released.

  • Capwulf

5 inches huh? Just how big can these screens get?

  • BoyGenius

5 inch screen, maybe 4.5 Max ever for a phone. 5 inches is only 2.5 inches from being the same length as my dick. That’s to big IMO.

    • Channan

No one needed to know your dick is only 2.5 inches, but thanks for sharing anyway.

But I agree. 5″ is too big for a phone. I thought this was a tablet at first.

    • Harry Johnson

“5 inches is only 2.5 inches from being the same length as my…”

Well based on my calculations, that means your junk is 2.5″ long (proof: 5.0″ – 2.5″).

  • Sonya

I think the 5″ screen is pushing it, but id have to see how big it is in the hands. Looks good though.

  • Pete

does anyone else think it looks like a blackberry storm?

    • LostPlatypus

I was thinking the same thing. Glad I’m not the only one.

Buying any Android device with an already outdated OS is basically saying you are okay with never being up to date.

    • none

      10-4 good buddy

    • El Bobbito

While I can understand your point, look at the EVO, rooted a full 12 days prior to actual availability. Who cares what it ships with? Anymore, devices are routinely updated and re-flashed. Sure, you can sit back and wait on “official updates”….but when has anyone who’s SERIOUS about their OS and performance done that????

    • Sigh

Yeah, because there’s no way to update the phone yourself…rollseyes. There’s a lot of people whove stopped relying on OEMs/carriers to update their phone a long time ago. Try googling ‘XDAdev’… smartass.

      • StevenGlansburg

How come when someone jailbreaks an iphone it shows the iphone is closed off, but when someone does the same thing to anything Android its okay??????

      • Electrofreak

Because Dell is the stupid one putting an old OS onto the Streak, not Google. Entirely different situation with Apple since they control everything about their devices, software, hardware, and operating system.

In fact, there’s virtually no reason to root Android Froyo anymore, it’s such an open platform. It’s just up to the manufacturer to put it onto the device instead of forcing the user to do it for them.

        Seriously, quit trolling.

      • DJ Megatron

My problem with Android is just that, it’s up to the maunfacturers. Which is why there is fragmentation going on right now with 1.6, 2.0, 2.2, 2.2. The fact that companies are releasing new phones, with older versions of the OS.

      • Electrofreak

@DJ Megatron: The primary reason this stuff is happening is is because of custom UIs. It takes so long to adapt a custom UI like Sense or MotoBlur to a build of Android, that by the time they’re done, there’s a new version out and they have to rinse and repeat.

Hopefully we’ll see Froyo and Gingerbread rectify this.

Now the Streak runs vanilla Android IIRC, so I’m not sure what the big problem is. My best guess is that it has something to do with scaling to that 5 inch screen.

    • SKINNI

Yea seriously! It shouldnt be that hard to push for Google to give them 2.2 for it. Or 2.1 at the least. No phone should drop with an operating system older than the newest one the company has readily availible.

I love Android but they really need to fix this. Have ur phone ready for the new OS or put it back on the shelf!

      • Electrofreak

        Christ you guys are naive.

They don’t need to ask Google to give them 2.2, when Google releases 2.2, it’s available to everyone immediately.

The manufacturer then needs to get 2.2 onto the phones and configured appropriately for the hardware.

Dell is the one responsible for Android 1.6 on the Streak, not Google! Get a clue!

      • SKINNI

IF U TAKE NOTE OF MY LAST SENTENCE I PUT BLAME ON THE PHONE MAKER. I DONT FAULT GOOGLE. SURE 2.2 ISNT RELEASED SO THEY WOULD HAVE TO GIVE THEM THAT BUT 2.1 IS THERE FOR THEM.

NONTHELESS THANKS FOR “REELING” FROM IT & BESTOWING UR VAST KNOWLEDGE UPON ME SIR!

      • Electrofreak

I’m still reeling from this, so I’m back.

If you go to the store and buy a Dell with Windows 95 on it despite the fact that Windows 7 is out, do you call up Microsoft to complain?! No!

Do you blame Dell for being ridiculous and putting an old OS on your computer? Yes!

        It’s not rocket surgery! :-p

  • Lief

So does it have phone or not. I am seeing conflicting information on from the various sources.

    • Electrofreak

Yes, it does. The Streak is an oversized smartphone.

  • ernielm

That’s amazing! I am sure that Android fanboys will come up with an excuse! But that’s the problem with Android, as it was/is with Windows. You have to wait for hardware manufacturers and/or carriers to decide when and if to carry an OS upgrade. That drives me crazy and to qualify, I am a Google/Android/Apple fanboy!

    • Versed

I’d agree with it, except 2.1 is like several months old, not released last week, no excuse whatsoever, Google i.e. Android is going to have to enforce minimal standards or the fragmentation is going to get a heck of a lot worse before it gets better. And yes I have a Nexus One.

I just made a paper mockup of a 5 inch screen (just the screen) and it is just a hair, on each side, bigger than my Storm. It’s almost 4.5 inches long and 2.5 inches wide. Again, that’s just the screen. After adding the header and footer to that thing, you are looking at close to an additional inch in length. My first question to myself is; Self, do you want to carry a (Hypothetically Speaking) 5.5+ inch long phone with old tech and a verbal promise for a strong future around?

  • webby

In some states this might be large enough to legally qualify as a weapon.

  • iamajim

jeeeezzz-what a bunch of s@hithead cynics; most people don’t really care about all the gawdamn updates or what the version is it ships with, they just want a phone that works reliably for the two years there stuck with it. and at this size we’re not talking phone any more, it’s a MID that has a phone stuffed into it just like the iphone is really just an ipod with a phone stuffed up it’s a……

  • iName

dell is so dumb. but the time this gets the US everyone will stop caring. and 1.6? thats WEAK.

  • xman

boy genius says “16gb of internal storage” but the specs on the press release says 2gb of internal storage??? wtf?

  • Nunya Bizness

If this can fit comfortably in a front pocket a 5″ device may be the best solution…..
Especially if you use in conjunction with a bluetooth headset.

What is the dimension and weight on this thing???

  • FunkyG

    HELLO??!….YEAH…I’M IN THE CINEMA!!…

    NO, IT’S RUBBISH…

Love it, Love it, Love it. This is the device of the future. I sure hope T-Mobile is watching. Bring it please……….
