Android gets ported to the iPhone 3G

Software

iphone-3g-android

Android fanboys with a fetish for Apple hardware should pay close attention to this one, as Google’s smartphone OS has been successfully ported over to the iPhone 3G. Much like the OpeniBoot Android port for the first-gen iPhone, most of the OS’ features and functions are working properly, although at this time audio has yet to be ported into the Linux kernel. No worries though, as all of this and more, including backlight controls and power management, are nearing completion. Desperate to try it out? Sadly it will take a few days before all of the binaries are posted, however in the meantime we have the video after the jump to help pass the time.

I love how his “tripod” for his iphone 3GS is a coffee cup! lol Good work though. Now bring it to iPad!!!

    • Jeff

Probably spent all of his other money on iccessories for his ipad. $50 just to hook up this camera, I guess no itripod for me this week.

I’m all about Android, but I don’t get the purpose behind this. It’s like when people want to run Win7 on a Mac. Why? I understand if you want to port OS X to a more powerful an less expensive machine, but why move Win7 to a less powerful, more restrictive, and more expensive machine?

    Same w/ Android to iPhone.

    • Marty Mar

HTC hardware is great, but doesn’t hold a candle to Apple hardware. Android on Apple hardware is the ultimate win/win for me.

      • user

        Marty Mar,
Can you give examples of how the Apple hardware is better? I’m curious in your reasoning.

On the surface, I see a non-removable battery and not particularly good call reception as downsides to the iPhone hardware.

I am sure there are some Android devices with perhaps not-so-great reception too, but many (all?) of them have removable batteries.

Is there something that specifically attracts you to the Apple hardware that I’m overlooking?

      • DeeSchnider

        probably the A4

      • Marty Mar

It’s been my experience that Apple makes a more solid product in general. Nothing specific. I had an iPhone 3G for about 16 months and loved the device itself, didn’t care for the OS. It was a really solid phone, physically.

Personal preference, I use Apple for all my computing needs and they have never failed me. Again, I just don’t care for their phone OS. Android has a leg up on them in the OS department.

As far as the battery thing goes, again, personal preference. In the year that I’ve been using Android phones, I’ve never had a need to take the battery out. Reception is a non-issue to me, way to many factors involved (carrier, coverage, signal, phone, etc etc).

        Too much bezel, FAIL

      • jeff

I agree with you Marty Mar. I really like Android (I have a Motorola Droid) but I hate Apple, but I love their products. My MacBook has lasted me for forever and all of my other laptops physically fell apart within a year or two which is totally unacceptable (Dell and Gateway = SHITTY).

Also, in response to “user”, an example of where the hardware is much better on the iPhone than any Android device is its superb touch screen. The iPhone and the iPad have WAY better touchscreens than my Motorola Droid, and I do not blame that on Android, I blame it on the capacitive touch screen technology. Apple’s iPhone and iPad are way more responsive to lighter touches and much quicker to react to any touch/movement I make. My MotoDroid (though I’m very pleased with it as a whole) has a pretty crappy touch screen, and I’m really glad it has a keyboard and I’m not forced to rely on the on-screen keyboard.

I Hate Apple for how totalitarian and evil it is, but Marty Mar is right – Apple makes great products.

    • The_Omega_Man

Steel you actually make a good point! I think the answer is simply Because they Can do it! Remember AnDROID does!

The side benefit is for those poor bastards out there with iPhone 3G phones (being shunned by Apple on iPhone OS4), there will be a potential Real “Upgrade” and some Real 3rd party application “Multi-tasking,” hope for them!

And who knows, once the iPhone/Apple fans get a taste of Real freedom on their mobile devices, maybe they will want/demand more, and move over to the Real Android thing! =)

    • PejHod

People mainly install Windows 7 just to have the best of both worlds, now they have the ability to run, SMOOTHLY, Mac OS X and Windows 7, something that a PC could never do reliably. Some apps just aren’t available for the other OS and the simplest way to run them is with that OS.

Now Android for iPhone is sorta the same theory, now we can run both OS on one device, how many phones can do that? Granted the port isn’t foolproof, but it allows iPhone users to understand the other OS, mess around, and maybe even dev some apps.

  • StevenGlansburg

the funny part is that the iphone will get OS 2.1 before the majority of Android devices actually do…

    • RT

      swing…. and a miss

      • StevenGlansburg

Yeah, let me re-phrase my original comment…. Why would you want to cripple your iphone with Android?

      • QuesoGrande

Why? Because it would be fun to see Apple and its legions of followers throw hissy fits, file lawsuits, have the police kick in doors, etc. It’s good entertainment for those of us not inside the insanity.

      • RT

because most people would prefer an android OS. iphone does well because of great hardware, millions of apps, and a legion of brainless apple fanboys who would buy a steve job dump if given the chance.

      • The_Omega_Man

I liked your original comment better! At least that was funny! This one is just curious (hopefully sarcastic).

What will the 3G owners do after the IPhone OS4 comes out? Pay Apple Yet AGAIN? Many Android Apps are Free or generally significantly cheaper than their iPhone equivalents (assuming they exist).

I think the better question would be, why wouldn’t iPhone owners want the choice to run Android OS? I certainly would have no problem if someone ported the iPhone OS4 to my Droid!

Android is all about empowerment of the user not necessarily the corporation! Think about it!

  • ripratm

    @Steel
Umm maybe because in about 3 months when the iphone4 comes out there are going to be a crap ton of iphone3G suddenly laying around. Mine being one of them, so if I can get android on the iphone3G and get some additional use out of it with wifi thats better than the 400 phone sitting in a drawer some where.

  • GjB

Wrong way round.. How about porting iPhone OS to the HTC Dream or Desire and making that lovely hardware so much more useful. It’s not the hardware that makes the iPhone attractive, it’s the software.

  • Joe

    Lol@Steven

I think it’s great to have a community of coders behind this, only good can come, even if it’s just a novelty for the Time being

  • eric

How about you source your articles??? Its not like this is YOUR video your posting.

        same with Apple?

      • Jeff

They have apps on your iphone also scrot

    • Nigmateck

Iphone OS = communism is an insult to communism. Communism isnt bad. the iphone OS is.

  • SupAll

Cool! If an Android OS gets ported to an iPhone, does that iPhone now become part of the Android marketshare? Not that it really matters since it’d be fractions of fractions of a percent.

  • mosamjc

    Android=socialism
    iPhone OS=capitalism

Dumb ass. Totalitarian maybe, but what oligarchical capitalistic institution isn’t?

    • Mrwirez

Dude.. Seriously? Scale back the Glen Beck..
      Can you even define socialism?

  • D. J.

Pretty cool, and it will be nice having an Android device with 16GB of built in storage, but this will probably be a horrible Android phone overall.128MB of RAM will be painful for multitasking.

  • kirk

    Ewwww

  • HA!

Putting Android on an iphone is like putting a thong on Kirstie Alley. Both were hot once, but today there are so many better models for that kind of wear.

    • Jeff

So android is the thong? Deep seeded in the crack of the iphone

  • Jarrett

Wait just one God Damn minute! You mean to tell me that someone out their isn’t happy with the almost 40 Android devices? How is it that umpteen manufacturers can not produce sufficient hardware for the Android OS? Jesus, Apple has to do everything for Google.

    • Jarrett

And yes, that may very well be the greatest comment to ever hit the internet.

    • Jeff

      Careful,
You don’t wanna lose your google maps, and gmail

      • Jarrett

I couldn’t lose those, Google and Apple are under a contractual agreement. Plus, Google is a corporation just like Apple, main goal is to make money. Google will continue to do business with Apple to make money. Besides, if it weren’t for Google having their CEO on Apple’s board of directors we would never have Android running on an iPhone or one of those “also ran” devices.

      • Jeff

And if it weren’t for your mother you’d still have a dirty buttcrack

      • Jarrett

Funny as that is and yes it was funny, being a sadly hairy individual, my wife may not be so convinced that it isn’t dirty.

  • jazzyl

    I like this…..

  • loki
