Google Nexus One: 135,000 phones sold in 74 days

We’re not going to go as far as the Silicone Alley Insider and declare the Nexus One “a flop” but the sub-par sales numbers do tell us something… launching with the 3G bands of the #4 U.S. carrier and selling exclusively through a web portal may not be a wise go-to-market strategy. Mobile research firm Flurry estimates that only 135,000 Nexus Ones have been sold after 74 days on the market. As a comparison, the Motorola DROID sold 1.05 million units and the iPhone sold around 1 million units in the same time period. The DROID had a rumored $100M marketing push, and the iPhone was a full $599 out of pocket at time of launch, which make these Nexy’s sales figures even less impressive. We’re sure the N1′s sales numbers will improve as it launches on Verizon Wireless and Vodafone in the coming months, however… we just thought the insane AdWords push from Google would have yielded better results.

I think you are wrong – TMO reported that contract ARPU was $51 in the Q4’09, down from the $52 in the Q4’09, and $54 in Q4’08. Contract ARPU decreased sequentially and year-over-year due primarily to lower monthly recurring charges from contract customers, as the customer base moved to lower ARPU products, including unlimited rate plans. So to off-set the ARPU decline and feasting on unlimited plans – watch for the data options to follow.

The reason the Nexus One didn’t isn’t selling as crazy as the Droid and iPhone is because.

    1. Pretty much only the geeks know about it. Google and T-Mobile didn’t market this thing like Verizon did with the Droid, and then pretty much anything Apple sells itself (besides the computers that is).

I think it was Google’s fault this thing isnt’ selling like hot cakes, i don’t know if they intended it to be like that or not. T-Mobile wasn’t gonna really market the hell out of it since they actually don’t even sell the phone, its just allowed to run on its network.

74 days to reach that number? And the iPad exceeded that in pre-orders on the first weekend (2 days)? Wow.

  • bcparker

it was release unsubsudized and only with tmobile if wanted… hell, i couldn’t even find where to order it online! (then again, i didn’t care to order it to begin with TMO b/c i don’t have TMO and that would have been a waste of money)

once its released to all carriers, i’ll probably look into it.. until then, i’m happy with my droid…

The low numbers are easy..current T-Mobile customers weren’t given a cost effective way into a Nexus and 1ghz just wasnt enough to draw large numbers of customers from Verizon and att. As the #4 carrier it was just stupid practice to neglect people already on your service.

    • B

You can thank Google for that, not T-Mobile. This is a fact. Another fact is that T-Mobile very willingly bent over backwards to accomodate me, a current subscriber, and to look the other way in regards to Google’s obvious control method(s).

Lmao @ the droid fans happy it out sold the iPhone in 74 days meanwhile the iPhone is on it’s end of life shelf, hey did u ever think people hold off now on the 3gs because they know the 4G is coming out within like 3 months lmao let’s see if the droid can outsell that :)

    • vic

      LMAO @ your reading comprehension.

They are comparing the sales of the 3 devices when they first launched.

Meaning they are comparing the sales of the original iphone when it FIRST launch to the Droid and nexus one launch sales.

      • B

        LMAO

That doesn’t make sense though… The Droid is subsidized so it’s 33% cheeper than the 2G iPhone yet barely outsold the iPhone.
The nexus One was Googles flagship device and sold…135,000 units.

In conclusion you can downrank me all you want but numbers don’t lie.

      dont do that man

Only thing that matters is that I would get a Nexus One, MY Nexus One before the Droid and most certainly before an iPhone. Also, of course as long as Google continues to support it, which they will.

  • Michael

uhh… the at&t nexus one is $529 with no service plan… i’d just wait until at&t gets an HTC version and pay half that with a 2yr contract extension. Shelling out $300 is easier than $530 at one time.

  • john

Apple is brainwashing people. The Nexus one is much better than the iphone.

    • http://Bgr Frylock

I use my phone for music, video and web surfing… All 3 have COUNTLESS reviews saying the iPhone is better than the nexus one at being a media player. Thanks but I’ll believe my eyes and not a spec sheet.

Excuse me, do you need help with your wheelchair, I mean your crippled OS? Got native flash lately? Maxipad flash? Nope…

You love Steve long time, long time, yes?

        There’s a reason developers are leaving…

Did I just say that allowed, oh my! lol =)

I think this far from says anything about the Nexus One itself, but more about people. It says we’re not that stupid Google, we’re not going to spend $500+ dollars on a dang phone. We’ll just wait until we can get a real deal from our carries thanks.

people don’t wanna buy a phone they’ve never seen or touched

    • maeby

you hit the nail on the head here.

in a world that doesn’t, droid does

Well, this is an opinionated crowd! But I think all the Apple hate comes not from the dislike of that particular company; it is because people really like the underdog to succeed. A few years ago everyone hated Microsoft and their Wimo 6.x just because they were so dominant. Now that they are an underdog, we are rooting for Windows Phone 7.

Yes the sales numbers of Dorid and iPhone seem close but people have dissected it. I am on Verizon, but I say, give credit where credit is due. iPhone has by far the most impressive numbers; a million people shelled out $600 to get it without even touching it. But Apple did have a few advantages.

It is partly because of Apples marketing, where they show off the product and then let the buzz build for a couple of months. Ideal time frame for the word of mouth marketing. By the time of release people are lining up for it. Plam tried to do that but waited too long to release the Pre, the buzz built up and then died down.

Also, compared to Google, a mobile phone is part of Apple’s core competency. They are a company that made operating systems as well as consumer products. They leveraged their OS expertise along with their product design expertise brilliantly to create the iPhone. Google has none of those it is their first consumer product with a relatively new OS. If Apple gets into the search engine market, I will not be switching from Google anytime soon but would not want Apple to fail either.

iPad is selling only because of Apples reputation. They have worked hard to earn it and now it is paying dividends. First iPhone also leveraged on iPod’s success and brand recognition.

Who the hell is rooting for Win 7?

  • Keith

I’d say those sales numbers are pretty decent for a handset that wasn’t advertised, fully compatibility on the 4th largest netwok in the US and was offered without a subsidy for other users who would only get 2G service. Just watch how it does in the next 74 days with the UMTS Quad-band version.

do the Droid #’s include the Milestone?
