WIND Mobile to team up with Blockbuster to sell handsets

It’s not a surprise that WIND Mobile and Blockbuster are joining forces to serve their own unique interests, but we’re told the partnership will be official very, very soon. All told, there will be 16 locations with 13 serving the Greater Toronto Area and 3 serving Calgary. No mention was made of any expansions outside of those two metropolitan areas after the network is up in running in other cities, but one can be forgiven for assuming that will be the case. Let’s just hope each 150 square foot “store within a store” is a lot prettier than those full-fledged WIND stores. For WIND, the partnership means greater visibility and reduced costs. For Blockbuster, well, it just means that maybe people will actually go into their stores.

UPDATE: A long-time friend of the site just sent us in a pic of one of the kiosks. So far the consensus at BGR HQ is no, the kiosks are not prettier than the retail outlets. Check it out the pic after the break.

While this will give them increased visibility, they need to put some effort into their customer service to set themselves apart from the other three CS nightmares we call service providers.
Quality of service is paramount, and I highly doubt Blockbuster is the solution.

It does reduced costs (as mentioned above) which they can hopefully pass along to consumers. As far as customer service is concerned they sure are making a lot of promises so it’ll be interesting to see how this all plays out.

I can tell you right now, out of personal experience. This these types of WIND kiosk is not going to be in a Blockbuster near me.
Living in waterloo all the blockbusters here are just a hole in the wall run by teenagers.

They’re better off opening kiosks at the 2 (soon to be 3) large shopping centers in town.

the ONLY thing I don’t like is seeing the wires for the computers. Nice job, WIND.

I believe they will have Vancouver stores as well seeing job openings listed on their web site for Vancouver region

Blockbuster’s year over year same store sales are down 14% and only 0.5% of their revenue comes from non-movie/food sources. Terrible place to put a cell phone kiosk if you ask me.

Even Rogers has had trouble selling phones in their video stores and they’re the same brand!

I work at a blockbuster in America, I wish we would have wind as a carrier down here. I bet there are some sweet employee discounts.

…Canada is in America, I believe u meant to say the US.

  • Blockbuster? More Like Bustedblocks

Blockbuster? HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW…. hold on… wait… HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAH–heh—hoooooo. Ok, I’m over it.

Sorry, I’m not Canadian, is Blockbuster like, still popular and still open over there or something?

Sad fact: The Blockbuster down the street from me close and started a sale over a month ago. Then it went to everything 60% off. Now its at 70% off and you can still see crap for sale in the store and on even bothering to look twice. Even 70% off, no one here wants to go to Blockbuster. Though I do regret not getting in there sooner to snag some blu-rays and games.

I’m not trying to insult WIND or Canadians or anything of the sort… I’m just laughing at how different it would be here. If T-mo or even something like Metro PCS were to try the same thing… it would be the biggest failure since… well, BLOCKBUSTER!!!

HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW HAW…

Blockbuster doesn’t seem like a smart move as part as selling partners go for Wind. Blockbuster feels like a sinking ship itself.
