Those of you who have always wanted a Kindle 2 from Amazon but never pulled the trigger citing its cost have little excuse not to break out the plastic this morning. The 2nd generation E-Book reader has benefited from a price drop. Shedding $40 off of its price tag and standing firm at $259, Amazon shouldn’t have too much of a problem obtaining a decent boost in sales. Of course there’s the fact that it only has a CDMA radio and can’t download books while abroad, but that’s just a sacrifice you’ll have to make… Or will you? No, because Amazon has announced that come October 19th, it will be selling the Kindle with U.S. & International Wireless. Awful name, yes, but a good enhancement as its GSM radio and AT&T SIM card will let jet setters grab the latest Murakami while in one of the “100 countries and territories” it will receive service in. You’ll be charged a fee of $1.99 on top of the price of the book for the international download, but what’s $1.99 these days anyway?

Can u upload ur own books and mags onto this thing? Or does it have to be a download?

That’s a nice try, but you’re better off going with Barnes & Noble eReader app. They have the world’s largest selection of eBooks & you’re not tied down to a proprietary device. Oh, & they’re not deleting off purchases from your device. Fahrenheit 451 indeed…

I’d wait for the Apple tablet, which I believe will be a total computer with the ability to run the available 85,000 apps, plus have a touch screen and be a book reader.

Also Apple Mac is going to unveil soon the “kindle” killer according to some apple teams. So competition will be rude and I think that only one will win the market.

I bought the Kindle 1 for $399 when it came out because it was obvious that it would ultimately pay for itself (much less expensive best sellers). It has done just that, and then some.

The other reason was because when someone recommends a book, I can, at that moment, read reviews on it and download a first chapter or so at no cost. If I then want to buy it, I click, “buy” and it downloads to my Kindle in less than a minute.

But a key reason I want the Kindle 2 is because of its much larger dictionary. It’s frustrating to click on an unfamiliar word only to find that it’s not there. It’s also better laid out, it’s easier to use its features, and I like the idea of it being capable of reading to me, electronic voice and all.

$259 sounds great, but if I buy this one it won’t pay for itself (books are the same price).

So I’ll just have to wait ’til a weak moment when my ‘emotional want’ overrides my ‘objective need’. It’s bound to happen, it always does.
