Apple and Verizon said to be working on an iPhone for 2010

Rumor

People have been whistling pretty much the same tune for ages, but a new set of iPhone/Big Red rumors have emerged courtesy of USA Today. The paper has reportedly been informed by oh so typical “sources familiar with the situation” (aren’t newspapers adorable) that the iPhone is headed to Verizon in 2010 after AT&T’s exclusivity deal runs out. According to USA Today’s sources, the Verizon iPhone will run on its CDMA network — a notion that had been dismissed earlier as Verizon is planning its LTE roll out starting in 2010. Verizon’s CEO has also made it pretty clear in the past that there will never be a CDMA iPhone offered by Verizon. Then again, getting caught up in this CDMA vs LTE debate is quite irrelevant to most Americans who are more or less praying for an end to the AT&T iPhone exclusivity so that more carriers might offer popular device in the near future.

    LOL @Iphone 3G No Bars

This is great news, hope it comes true. Why are you iPhone fan boys so upset? Are you loyal to AT&T or Apple? I would think Apple, AT&T is no friend of anyone.

  • B.G.

Apple’s contract with AT&T doesnt end until 2012 (07-12) so i wonder how Verizon is going to launch an iPhone. Unless they pay to break the contract…?

Where have you read that official statement? (Not just a rumor.)

  • Lefty

@ JoeDaddy – You said “just try going into a Sprint, Verizon, or Alltel store and ask one of their reps to show you where the 3G icon is on their display models.”

I guess you are trying to say that Sprint, Alltel and Verizon don’t have 3G.

My 2 year old pearl from verizon says 3G on it and all companies you list have a larger 3g network that Att.

    @ Iphone 3G No Bars
what makes you think that verizon customers dont love the iphone?
VZW customers just wont trade good reception with c=ustomer service at its best for an iphone.
now that they will have the option of both they’r ecstatic about it.
now only if you can re-write your post with BIGGER FONTS……………………

  • digitalfreek

Not everyone can get the iPhone because not everyone has ATT coverage (i.e. rural areas). Nobody is saying that apple will get ALL 80+ million customers either. Most everyone agrees that apple’s impressive earnings they released were HEAVILY bolstered by the iPhone and the revenue it produces (App Store). If Apple gets a few million Verizon customers to pick up an iPhone they will continue to set records every quarter. If you think Apple doesn’t want piece of that pie, well, that bridge is still for sale.

Also, not everyone on verizon who has blackberry has a business need for one, often times there is no better alternative.

  • Mark

    @ D.
What we’re trying to say is that some people are unwilling to change carriers for a cell phone. I know plenty people who would like an iPhone but do not want AT&T. And in some cases some people did not even have the option of buying an iPhone such as in Vermont where only Verizon and Unicell had service until Verizon bought out Unicell and sold the overlapping areas of service to AT&T. So as of now not everyone is a potential customer.

  • backbeat

@Lefty/Louie: Get a grip on your big head for a change. Without Sprint’s data roaming on VZW, it’s no better than TMo.

  • Don Louie

The troll comes back w/lies, ready to prove that 98% yet being that you’re bringing up roaming again

  • backbeat

^Sprint’s maps lie? Thanks for the info, BitchBoy! :)

  • JasonT1273

    @VZW who said:
Verizon is the backbone for networks in rural areas.

Really now? We know who you work for or are at least a fanboy of but do you seriously think Verizon owns all the network backbone in the country? Try again.

In my rural area Verizon exists only in pockets surrounded mostly by AT&T (former Ameritech/SBC), and to a lesser extent Windstream (former Alltel), and several other small companies. The backhaul doesn’t even touch a Verizon circuit unless the tower or switch happens to be in one of those “pockets” which isn’t very often.

Please don’t spout your own bias as fact.

  • joecurve

“Without Sprint’s data roaming on VZW, it’s no better than TMo.”.

Dammn right. My friends on sprint spitting in my face saying that I’m paying for them so they are able to roam on the nations *best* network.
    Keep it up backbeat

Two weeks ago, all the articles were about AT&T’s wish to extend their relationship with Apple.

This weekend, all the articles are about the possibility of Apple building a CDMA iPhone for VZ.

It’s a well placed leak by Apple that will allow them to negotiate a few extra $ with AT&T to extend their exclusivity until LTE launches on both networks. At that point, it’s fair game for either carrier.

  • Kido

Yes this is correct, the contract ends in 2012.

Where did you see that official announced? (Not a rumor.)

  • david_uk

I feel really sorry for Americans. Whereas we Brits can hop on a plane to one of those places that sell factory unlocked iPhones, pop in our SIM and we’re good to go without changing carriers, across the pond you’re paying dearly for having two incompatible technologies.

Never realised the significance all those years ago, but decision to go GSM was about the best thing the EU ever did.

  • Jim

Qualcomm is sampling both CDMA/LTE & GSM/LTE dual standard chips (already have GSM/CDMA chips for Verizon “world phones” and the BB Storm).

Verizon will use CDMA to support current customers at least until 2015, and voice will not initially flow over the LTE network.

so if iphone comes to verizon it will be CDMA/LTE. Geez this is not impossible to engineer, and by 2010, Verizon is likely to have 90 million subscribers — that too big a potential market for Apple to ignore.

  • ben dover

I’ve noticed not one poster has even mentioned about cdma/gsm chipsets, the ones currently being used in the 8830, Storm, the upcoming 9630 (Niagra) and Storm 2.

Hello Mcfly! This is what will be used in the proposed new iPhone being developed for Verizon and the other North American CDMA/EVDO Providers. Single Qualcomm chipset that has gsm/cdma/umts/evdo/hspa/lte. Qualcomm’s MSM8960 chipset. Look it up, its most likely going to he based on that architecture. One design, takes care of all. Surprised that no one mentioned this as how its possible for apple to satisfy both cdma/evdo and upcoming lte all at the same time.

  • ben dover

    @ jim

Sorry Jim I was still typing when you posted. You beat me to the punch!

  • VZW

    @ JasonT1273

Out west, alltels GSM is what most t-mobile and att use unless you get on a cellular one, which Alltel covers more of, and in AL and MS, unicel and Alltel are used for roaming. And AZ and NM and OR, and NV, ect have alltels GSM service, andguess what! Its rural, and every network roams off of it. Verizon is the backbone for networks. Verizon has the best network in the US hands down, and I can say it because I’ve had every network.

  • joecurve

    ATTSAL SAID
will allow them to negotiate a few extra $ with AT&T to extend their exclusivity”
do you really think that ATT can EVER match the $$$$ apple will get by releasing it to multiple carriers??? let alone the potential pool of new customers???
this is sooooooooooooooooooooooo idiotic, these comments about ‘negotiating tactics’ is total non-sense.. im NOT saying that VZ/APPLE are negotiating, but for people to dissmiss it based on that kind of speculation is total @#@&!!!!!

  • Crunch

Oh man…such a high concentration of gullible people…folks, please don’t make the mistake of thinking that Apple, AT&T, Verizon, your utility companies, etc. “care” about you other than to relieve you, screw you, bolt you down for as many years as possible, and once they turn on their “sniffers”, and find another company to re-possess you of as of your cold hard cash as is possible. Cash is king.

Apple will re-sign with AT&T if it is to their financial advantage.

Apple will drop AT&T like they had never heard of the company, and turn around to sign with Verizon, if it is to their financial advantage.

Sprint and T-Mobile are as attractive to Apple as boost Mobile.

And you thought Microsoft was bad?? LOL…u tickle me…

    • Sandy

If *YOU* owned a company… what would you do?

      Sell a $600 unlocked iphone.
(Which wouldn’t sell very well at all.)

Or sign up with *ONE* carrier that agrees to pay you MILLIONS of dollars, and allows you to sell your phone for $200… and the carrier pays you for the other $400.

      Apple is a company.
      Apple exists to make money.
If Apple doesn’t make money, it won’t exist.

  • avremele

Verizon store manager told me to hold on tight for summer of 2009.

  • halpwr

    hahahahhahah

  • Tony

Apple is not smart to be honest instead of working on trying to get a contractwith one cell phone provider they shud try to go big and get it for all cell phone providers, Sprint, AT&T, Verizon etc.Imagine how much money they would make i mean look at all the people that want iphone!!!
