We already know that Google plans to release a Pixel successor this year that will be a high-end premium handset, just like the first models. A new leak seems to indicate that Google will have two devices in its Pixel 2 series, which appears to be consistent with its strategy of launching different sized smartphones in each of the past few years.
According to Android Poluce, the Pixel 2 is known internally as “walleye,” while “muskie” is the internal codename for the Pixel 2 XL.
Walleye was already spotted in the Android Open Source Project gerrit, with a source mentioning both code names to the site. The walleye reference was removed from the AOSP gerrit soon after it was discovered, though it can be seen in the image below — look for the “test” mention, where it says that walleye boots:
Fans of Google’s Nexus and Pixel smartphones already know that Google uses fish names for its phones and tablets when it references them internally. Every year, these codenames are leaked months before the actual devices are launched.
Other Pixel 2 details, including specs, prices, and availability dates, are not available at this time. All we know is that Google will stick with the Pixel brand this year and will continue to target the premium market with its Pixel handsets. Considering Google’s recent comments on the Pixel 2, we anticipate the phones will be available at some point in October, which means there’s plenty of time to learn more details about the Pixel 2 family.
