Of all the features and changes reportedly coming to the iPhone 8, few have received as much attention as the display. Although most rumors are now indicating that Apple will use an OLED display on at least one iPhone model this year, there’s still some confusion over whether or not the display on the iPhone 8 will be curved. We won’t know for sure until this fall, but signs are beginning to point to the answer being yes.
Days after an analyst claimed that the iPhone 8 display would feature the same flat design as the iPhone 7, Nikkei Asian Review countered with a report in which it said that the display would indeed be curved, but that “the curve will be gentler than screens in Samsung’s Galaxy S7 edge handsets.”
On Thursday, MacRumors was able to confirm Nikkei’s report, citing “multiple people familiar with the matter.” So while the display of the iPhone 8 will not be drastically different from the display of the iPhone 6, iPhone 6s and iPhone 7, it will feature a slight curve, making it “even sleeker” than previous iPhones.
Aside from the curvature of the display, the source of the Nikkei report also claimed that the iPhone 8 display will have “a viewable of about 5.2 inches,” but won’t offer any additional functionality. In other words, Apple isn’t introducing a mobile version of the MacBook Pro Touch Bar this year.
While the OLED iPhone 8 display will have a “gentle curve,” the iPhone 7s and 7s Plus (or whatever the other two phones end up being called) will have the same 2.5D glass that can be found on 2016’s iPhones.
