Now this is an interesting development. Rarely do you see a fresh new Android update reach a carrier-branded smartphone before the update is even finished rolling out to “pure Google” devices. Even more rare is a scenario where a Verizon Wireless smartphone is among the first handsets in the world to be updated to the latest and greatest version of Android.
It just so happens that the stars were aligned perfectly on Monday evening, however, and the world’s best Android phone was updated to Android 5.0 at the nation’s top wireless carrier.

Late on Monday, Verizon Wireless began rolling out Android 5.0 Lollipop to second-generation Moto X handsets.
For a quick reminder, we called Motorola’s Moto X the best Android phone on the planet when we reviewed it back in September. Faster Android phones have launched since then, and more powerful Android phones have debuted as well. But all things considered, we still think the Moto X offers the best total package that money can buy right now.
Following the hotly anticipated update to Android 5.0, the new Moto X is better than ever.
Motorola’s Android build on the Moto X is nearly stock, so owners will be able to enjoy all of Lollipop’s new features as Google intended. That includes the gorgeous new Material Design interface, speed improvements, battery life improvements, multiple user account support and more.
Of course, Moto X owners will also still be able to enjoy all of Motorola’s great add-ons, such as enhanced voice controls.
Android 5.0 is rolling out to Verizon’s Moto X right now, and you can see if the update is ready for your handset by opening the phone’s settings, scrolling down to “About phone” and tapping “System update.”
