In today’s harsh economic climate it’s nice to see that some people still have options – of course heading up the engineering team that built Android is quite the bullet point on one’s resume. Steven Horowitz, the Engineering Director of Google’s Android team, has decided to part ways with Google and head for greener pastures. As the Wall Street Journal reports, Horowitz has accepted an offer from California-based promotional technology startup Coupons, Inc. where he will begin work as the company’s new CTO. Among the first in a string of new hires, the emerging tech company plans to hire 40 new employees by the end of next month. The move comes at an interesting time; the Android team is now tasked with tweaking its open OS, enabling it to run on a variety of different devices. Did Horowitz get bored now that the stress and urgency of the Android launch is behind him? Or perhaps the direction the project is taking, away from a focus on refining the OS and addressing a variety of user concerns, was a negative change for the engineer. Whatever the case, Horowitz is gone and Google wishes him well. As to who will fill his shoes in Mountain View, we’ll have to wait and see.
