Whatever your opinions are on Google Glass, you’ve probably never had the opportunity to pick one up for yourself. The Explorer Program has been closed to the public ever since its inception, but according to The Verge, that might change later this month. A leaked document reveals that Google is considering opening up sales to the public, “where any U.S. resident would be able to purchase Glass (through google.com/glass) and join the Explorer Program.”
The document states that the announcement will take place at 6am PDT on April 15th, and the offer would be available for “about a day.” Anyone in America could plunk down $1,500 for Glass on that day, receiving a free pair of prescription frames or sunglass shades in the process. It looks like the principal signoff for the plan took place at some point on Thursday, signaling that Google has likely already made its decision as to whether or not it will follow through with this unprecedented expansion of the Explorer Program. Although this promotion might just be a way to get Glass on to more heads, The Verge points out that Google might be clearing out its Explorer edition stock to prepare for the still unannounced consumer launch of the device.
