Developer tools reveal screen resolutions for both upcoming Apple Watch models

Apple on Tuesday released its first iOS 8.2 beta software to developers and at the same time, the company also gave developers the tools they’ll need to build apps for the upcoming Apple Watch. While Apple’s first device in the wearables category isn’t expected to launch for another few months, Apple wants to ensure that third-party developers have enough time to make great apps for the new Apple Watch that are ready in time for launch.

Of course, as people begin to dig through those developer tools, new details about the Apple Watch are coming to light.

A few interesting and previously unknown tidbits have been picked out of Apple’s new WatchKit SDK so far. For one, Apple has confirmed that apps will only function while the Apple Watch is connected to an iPhone. The good news, however, is that this will only be a requirement in the early days, and the Apple Watch will support standalone apps later in 2015.

As MacRumors noted, WatchKit has also revealed the exact display resolutions of both upcoming Apple Watch models.

Different case materials aside, Apple plans to release two main Apple Watch models in 2015. One will be a 42mm model and the second will be a smaller 38mm version, as Apple confirmed when it unveiled the Apple Watch earlier this year.

Now, we also know that the 42mm Apple Watch model will feature a display with 390×312-pixel resolution, and the 38mm model’s display will sport 340×272 pixels.
