I was initially skeptical when I learned McDonald’s was planning to try making kale a selling point for its meals. But thanks to a new report from CBCNews, I now realized that it was all part of an elaborate ruse for tricking people into thinking something healthy when in reality they’re eating something with more calories, fat and salt than a Double Big Mac. You heard that right: It turns out that McDonald’s kale Caesar salad will pack on more pounds than one of its larger burgers.

The problem here isn’t the kale, of course — it’s all the other stuff McDonald’s puts on top of the kale. Among other things, the salad features “crispy bacon, real parmesan petals and roasted garlic focaccia croutons,” along with either “seasoned crispy chicken or grilled chicken breast.” What really puts it over the top, however, is the Asiago Caesar dressing that adds more than 200 extra calories to the meal.
In total, the kale salad features 730 calories, 53 grams of fat, and 1,400 milligrams of salt. A Double Big Mac, meanwhile, has 680 calories, 38 grams of fat and 1,340 milligrams of salt.
At any rate, if someone you know thinks they can lose weight by ordering the kale salad at McDonald’s, you really owe it to them to inform them of the awful truth.
