The launch of the Galaxy Note 4 in the United States is still a few days away, but it’s never too early to start getting excited about the next big thing. PhoneArena received a tip on Thursday suggesting that Samsung will begin producing a 5.9-inch Ultra HD Super AMOLED display with 700 pixels per inch in August 2015, bringing 4K resolution to its phablet lineup for the first time.

While there doesn’t appear to be any hard evidence to back up this tip, PhoneArena notes that Samsung discussed its plans to bring 2160 x 3840 Ultra HD displays to mobile by 2015 during Analyst Days a year ago. The gears are in motion for a 4K display on the Galaxy Note 5.
With all the recent talk of Samsung’s declining profits, it makes sense that the South Korean vendor would want to stay ahead of the curve when it comes to top-of-the-line smartphone specifications. The 2K display of the Galaxy Note 4 was certainly a contributing factor to its impressive first-month sales figures, topping 4 million units despite not releasing in a few major markets, including the U.S.
The general consensus is that Samsung needs bring something new to the table if it wants any one of its phones to receive the same attention as the iPhone. A 4K display wouldn’t hurt, but it’s only a single piece of the puzzle.
