It was too good to be true after all. Speaking with Ars Technica on Wednesday, a Google spokesperson made it clear that there are no plans to bring Google Fiber to the New York area at this time, despite a seemingly surreptitious job listing discovered earlier this week.

“Don’t read into the job listing,” said the spokesperson. “We’ve had a full team of folks working on Fiber in the New York office (and other locations around the world) for years. We don’t currently have any plans to bring Google Fiber to New York. We’re entirely focused on building out our networks in Kansas City, Austin, and Provo, and on exploring the possibility of bringing Fiber to the 34 locations we announced in February.”

Those 34 locations do not include New York, but if you’re fortunate enough to live in an area where Verizon FiOS is available, you do have a fiber optic solution. The rest of us will be forced to stick with Time Warner for the foreseeable future, although one of our commenters did point out that RCN is a relatively stable and well-liked alternative to the conglomerate that is Time Warner.

Ars Technica also notes that more than 60 positions are currently available on the Google Fiber team, including two in New York and a few dozen others in Austin, Texas and Mountain View, California.
