Google’s $199 Nexus tablet may pressure vendors to cut prices

Google’s $199 Nexus tablet may pressure vendors to cut prices

It is widely believed that Google will entere the tablet market in 2012 with an own-branded 7-inch Android tablet. The search giant has reportedly partnered with ASUS to build a $199 device that will compete against Amazon’s Kindle Fire. These low-cost tablets are expected to have a big impact on the entry-level tablet market and apply pressure to other vendors such as Acer, Lenovo and Samsung Electronics to cut prices, DigiTimes reported on Wednesday. The average gross margin on tablets is roughly 10% to 15% the report said, however as prices continue to drop and internal component costs increase, gross margins are expected to drop rapidly, forcing vendors and component makers to fight over narrowing profits. Google’s Nexus tablet is reportedly a “done deal” and should enter production in April and ship around June. The slate could be unveiled at Google’s annual I/O conference on June 27th if earlier rumors pan out. More →

Samsung exec says Galaxy S III may launch in April

Samsung exec says Galaxy S III may launch in April

Despite an earlier leak that made a May announcement seem increasingly likely, Samsung is apparently still considering an April launch for its highly anticipated Galaxy S III smartphone, South Korean news site MK reports. Samsung president for the China region Kim Young-ha is quoted as having said that the company is still pushing for an April launch. “In order to increase sales of the Galaxy S3 as well as the Galaxy Note which is already very popular in China, the company is considering rescheduling the rollout of the Galaxy S3 from May to April,” Kim reportedly said Wednesday while speaking at the Samsung Forum 2012. An earlier report suggested that the flagship smartphone is currently slated for a May 22nd announcement, as tipped on the home screen of a leaked product render. With HTC’s One-series smartphones set to launch next month, the South Korea-based vendor is undoubtedly under pressure to push up its Galaxy S III release, though carriers could stand in the way here in the United States. BGR exclusively reported that the Galaxy S III will feature a 4.8-inch display with 1080p HD resolution, a quad-core Exynos processor, Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich and a remarkably slim case made of ceramic. Is this the Samsung Galaxy S III?

By on March 21, 2012 at 8:25 AM.

Is this the Samsung Galaxy S III?

Samsung’s highly anticipated next-generation flagship smartphone has reportedly been pictured. Dutch mobile blog GSM Helpdesk on Wednesday published what it claims to be an official press photo of the Samsung Galaxy S III, obtained from an unnamed source. The site also reasserts a wide range of specs exclusively reported by BGR over the past few months, including a full HD Super AMOLED display, Android 4.0 with Samsung’s TouchWiz UI and a 1.5GHz quad-core processor. The device pictured is in line with previously leaked renders, though we can now see that Samsung appears to have opted for capacitive hardware buttons in place of the on-screen navigation buttons seen in other Android 4.0 builds. A potential date for Samsung’s announcement has been reaffirmed as well; the weather in London and the Unpacked Event calendar entry pictured on the home screen point to a May 22nd press conference in London. Sprint and HTC delivered invitations to the media on Tuesday evening for a joint event that will be held on April 4th in New York City. A report on Monday suggested that Sprint is planning to release the HTC One X on June 10th, and the sleek Android 4.0 phone could very well be the focus of next month’s press conference. The One X would be among Sprint’s first LTE-enabled devices, and it features a dual-core Snapdragon S4 processor, a 4.6-inch high-definition display and a class-leading 8-megapixel camera powered by HTC’s dedicated ImageChip. Leaked image may reveal Motorola’s upcoming DROID Fighter

Leaked image may reveal Motorola’s upcoming DROID Fighter

The first image of what is believed to be the unannounced DROID Fighter has surfaced on Chinese forum PhoneHK. The handset is said to be equipped with the same massive 3,300 mAh battery that is found in the RAZR MAXX and a 4.6-inch high-definition display. The image of the phone also shows that the Android navigation buttons common to earlier RAZR models is absent, leading us to believe that the Fighter will use the on-screen buttons found in Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. Details surrounding the smartphone are limited and it isn’t clear if this will be a completely new device or another RAZR variant — though the latter seems more likely. The Fighter is rumored to land on Verizon’s 4G LTE network on April 12th. More →
