EU to investigate Google for anticompetitive advertising practices

General

Bloomberg is reporting that European Union antitrust regulators are preparing to launch an investigation aimed at concluding whether or not search giant Google “imposes exclusivity obligations on advertising partners.” Several companies, including Microsoft, are claiming that Google is preventing said partner-sites from placing ads for “competing services” on their websites. Foundem, a U.K. based price-comparison site, said Google was “stifling innovation” and that the company “should not be allowed to discriminate in favor of its own services.” In a written statement, Google explained: “There’s always going to be room for improvement and so we’ll be working with the commission to address any concerns.” The European Commission can levy fines of up to 10% of a company’s revenue for monopolistic practices. Last year, the group hit Intel with a $1.38 billion fine after determining its business practices were anticompetitive and detrimental to the market place.

that’s funny that microsoft is joining in on this when they have almost a monopoly themselves on the OS market that they want all of. also a question, have or will microsoft get fined for their practices with their OS products?

I guarantee you that’s apple trying to destroy google. Google is the most awesome company ever and they wouldn’t do anything to hurt anyone, even to compete. They’re not like all the other companies. They don’t even charge for their products for gods sake!

Apple wasn’t mention once in this article, why would you bring them up?

Bye Bye BGR, your obvious bias shines through!

Google hating post and a stream of pro Apple posts, I’m no fanboy but can’t stand obvious bias.

Magoo – it’s not bias to report the news. It’s not a rumor but a fact that google is being investigated. How does that make BGR biased?

Drew – He does make a point, there are an abundance of apple postings here, sometimes 3 or 4 posts regarding the same topic as updates come in.

Apple moves the meter. It’s not hard to figure out. Apple stories generate site traffic, and site traffic means ad impressions, and ad impressions mean money. Honestly, no one really cares about Motorola, Acer, HTC, etc. BGR is a business, and its bias is toward making money, not any individual company. When you grow up and get a job that doesn’t require you to wear a nametag or work the drive-thru, maybe you’ll understand.

As an analogy. ESPN heavily covers Brett Favre, not because it is biased toward Favre, but because even as people complain there are too many Brett Favre stories, ESPN’s TV ratings and page views spike any time there’s a Brett Favre story, and ratings/page view spikes equal more revenue.
