HP’s unlocked, GSM Palm Pre 2 available in U.S.; $450 [Updated]

mobile

Early this morning, HP made the unlocked, unbranded, GSM, Palm Pre 2 available on its U.S. website. The webOS 2.0 device, which will retail for $449.99 contract-free, is listed as “in stock” and has a ship time of under 24-hours. Just a quick recap on the Pre 2: 1 GHz processor, 3.1-inch multi-touch display with 320 x 480 resolution, Wi-Fi b/g, Bluetooth, GPS, 16GB of on-board storage, and a 5 megapixel camera. Anyone plan on picking one up?

UPDATED: We pinged HP to see exactly which 3G bands the unlocked, GSM Pre 2 being sold in the company’s U.S. online store would support, and we’ve got our answer: “It supports 3G with 850MHz and 1900MHz.”

I really like webOS, but it needs to come out on some better hardware. While the internal specs are pretty good, the screen is far too small, and I don’t like the added bulk of a physical keyboard, especially if it’s the same horrible jelly keyboard found on the first Pre. That keyboard was one of the primary reasons I got rid of my Pre.

Wish it worked on t-mobile 3G.

Actually buying an unlocked phone in the US is somewhat pointless unless you are on T-Mobile. Might as well take a carrier discount on contract if you can’t get a cheaper plan for bringing your own handset.

Well tmo removed the BYO device and get a monthly discount plan from their site on Sunday. idk if they still have it unofficially.

It’s still available. You just have to go to store or over phone.

    DOA for the second time

Why did you guys put up a pic of the original Pre? What does the new one look like?

What 3G gsm bands… That was maybe the most important information you could have provided.

It isn’t listed anywhere on the U.K, U.S, or French sites. We’ve reached out to Palm/HP for comment :)

        Fair enough.

From what I read elsewhere it appears to be a dual band 3G 850/1900 phone for use with AT&T

They be praying the Pre will sell, some.

Not a terrible price for the technology on hand. The display is a bit small.
But it’s essentially great for making calls and texting unless their app base grows.

Otherwise a brighter future lies in investing in iOS and Android devices instead. You’d be currently locked into ATT currently with an official iPhone (as in, not considering jailbreaking) so the best bet beyond that would be to look into an Android device for $500 or so unlocked, vs. the PP2 for $450. Even a budget Android device (being sold unlocked for $240 or so) may be a better option than the Pre 2, just because of the bigger app base and a few perks of having a current device (wifi n, for example).

Paying $450 for a stop-gap EOL device.Yes, that makes good sense.

Cute toy…within 2 years no one will ever have known that a WebOS phone existed. HP will make a tablet or two with WebOS, kill off the phones, and eventually go back to what they do best; sell servers, storage, and printers.

Why not sell them to Asia?
What are those Palm guys doing?

Just wait and see webos die slowly.

I’m tempted by this, very tempted. After the disappointing tactile experience with the first Pre, I think that I’ll wait to try it out, but WebOS was great.

If they dont get these things into carrier brick and mortar storefronts, they are going to sell even less!!

Yayayay! Waiting for this day for a while. I bought it! Should be here tomorrow.

The developer program is also live… $200 bucks off if you are signed up (FREE!).

$250 bucks is a great deal for this device. I travel internationally and this will make a wonderful backup phone.

I think we have to remember that this phone was created when it was still Palm, HP hasn’t really had time to do anything yet. I think we should judge webOS’s life expectance by what new devices are shown off at CES in January; if they are lackluster then webOS may be dead, but I’ll reserve judgement (and phone upgrade) until then.

    lower the price…
    bump up the hardware..
put it on a larger screen..

    maybe sell more?
