Nokia updating Ovi Maps with traffic, public transportation, and check-ins

General

Aside from announcing the C6-01, C7, and E7, Nokia also announced some added features to their Ovi Maps application today at Nokia World. The new, improved Ovi Maps will offer, live traffic flow information, a new drive assist mode, public transportation maps, a redesigned places page, and social check-ins. The public transportation maps will be available via a map layer for over 80 cities around the world and check-ins will allow you to broadcast your location via SMS or to your social network of choice. We’ve got a video demoing the new check-in feature after the break, but we have to warn you… the lame-factor of the video is way up there.

If only Nokia gave a shit about the U.S. market.

Co-signed! I think they’re a tad scared of the RIM/iOS/Android competition…but I love their products, as a former E71 owner. I feel they would be a breath of fresh air to the US smartphone market. We’ll just have to see if that becomes a reality.

They’re not afraid. They welcome competition.
The fact of the matter is, carriers here are a bunch of greedy, meddling c***s.

Noone wants to buy phones with carrier bloatware and removed features which is exactly what will happen if a carrier picked up a Nokia over here.

        BINGO!

    Nokia, dead man walking.

So I can update my ovi maps? I wish bing & google would allow us to save maps on sd card for offline use.

I personally would buy and use their GSM phones N97 (&mini), 6800, etc. Especially for my wife and “kids” who could occasionally use the OVI maps and navigation offline. If only AT&T would allow them to operate without the $30 data plan being rammed through our throats.

You don’t have to worry about that anymore… now they only offer a $15 (200mb) & $25 (2gb) data plans. When I had my N95, I was able to use their $15 unlimited data plan because they didn’t consider it a “smartphone”.

but I want ZERO data plan for my wife (who does not use data anyhow), but I’d like to get her a phone with offline navigation which helps a lot esp. hen we travel.

Nokia Ovi Maps allows you to do just that – download the map at home via Ovi Suite and use it offline with the built in GPS.

Lame video? Worse than apple or MS? Nah….

  • General Zod

That’s definitely not the way to show off the phone or Ovi Maps capabilities. Try not to focus so much on two uninteresting people next time Nokia.
