Sony announces two new PlayStation 3 models, adds capacity

Gaming

Today, at Gamescom, Sony announced several new PlayStation 3 models with updated storage capacities. The newly announced 160 GB PS3 Slim will retail for $299 — currently the price of the 120 GB model — and should be on sale in the coming days or weeks (it was seen earlier today on Amazon before the announcement). A second model, which can be purchased in the Move Bundle, comes with a 320 GB PlayStation 3 console, Sony’s Move controller, PlayStation Eye camera, and the game title Sports Champions. The Move Bundle should begin to show up on store shelves in mid-September and will retail for $399. The remainder of the show was dedicated to software trailers, announcements, and demos, including: Resistance 3, inFAMOUS 2, Medal of Honor, MAG, Killzone 3, Gran Turismo 5, Virtua Tennis 4, and Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One. Anyone going to pick up one of the larger consoles?

Although the PS3 is my favorite console, I think I’m gonna get Kinect. I can’t have another set of 8 remotes lying around.

  • Nelson

    Kinetic???

LOL! You mean that crappy ripoff of Sony’s old EyeToy motion control tech?

    Massive lag
    Horrible accuracy problems
    Can’t play while sitting down
Can only handle 2 players at a time
No games anyone would ever care about

Kintect will go great with Xbox fanboy’s previous favorite failed addon, their HD-DVD players.

What’s the point of getting a motion control type game if you’re gonna be sitting down?

      • B

I’m not big on motion control gaming in general, but the only reason I would get a PlayStation Move instead of any other offerings is because it’s the only motion controller that works with games I would be playing anyway. I can sit on the couch while playing Dead Space, Socom, Killzone, echochrome, Resident Evil, maybe even that Sorcery crap. These other games where you have to stand up and get active aren’t on my radar not because you have to get up, but because they’re usually some silly shit that interests little kids.

  • Andy

i wish i could get something for free after i bought the 40GB version for like $499 i think like 2 years ago :(

  • Tay

I’m sticking with the PS3 Slim I got and I’m going with the Kinect, like somebody said, that’s too many controllers laying around.

    I’m considering it.

As of now I don’t have an XBox360 or a PS3. I have a PS2 I’m pretty happy with (there are a LOT of great games out there I haven’t yet played). However, I want to play some of the latest titles. Been browsing the titles available for both systems and while XBox360 has the edge, PS3 seems to be gaining ground. (Also, it has a BluRay player, which is a bonus.)

Anyone got any advice? (And no, I don’t plan to get both.)

    • B

I think PS3 has had the ‘edge’ for a long time. More and more 360 exclusives keep coming to PS3, and as far as first party studios go, Sony has Microsoft beaten by far.

      • All Fanboys Must DIE

        B is a fanboy.

If you need Blu-ray, then PS3 had the edge. Simple.

Exclusives don’t mean crap anymore (except for Nintendo maybe). B fails to mention the number of Sony exclusives that have jumped to Xbox as well.

Both have Netflix as well, so its even there.

The only real deciding factor is what games do you want to play (Halo? or Killzone?) and do you need blu-ray.

      • B

Exclusives don’t mean crap anymore, yet the deciding factor is whether you want to play Halo or Killzone. Right.

  • DROID DOES FORCE CLOSING

That thing looks like a dildo

    • B

It’s hilarious how many people have been saying that since they first showed it. I don’t think any of you have ever seen a dildo.

      • All Fanboys Must DIE

Shut up fanboy. They could make a controller that inserts in your ass and vibrate and you’d defend it anyway. Sony fag.

      • B

Lmao what exactly am I defending? Stop using your keyboard as a confidence buildup you little shit.

  • Mrsmith

When they re add ps2 backwards compatibility, I’ll consider getting one

    • B

Good luck with that. Seriously though, good luck to you if you plan to wait for that. PS2 HD Collection discs seem to be the new MO. Even IF they ever did plan to add it back, it would likely be through software, so you might as well just get one now and enjoy the current games instead of worrying about old ones you’ve already been playing for years.

  • jared

Hey B get of Sony’s nuts

Xbox has wayyyy better games than Sony.

    • voidzone

      agree

    • B

      I have a PS3 and a 360. I prefer PS3. Get off my nuts.

  • Kevin Richards

I would much rather Sony spend their time fixing their poxy “Media Centre”. If my Samsung Galaxy S can stream mp4 movies from my DLNA server across my WIFI and onto my TV I don’t see why their “Media Centre” can’t do the same.

    Crap.

  • Mr. Bill

Dumped PS3, went with Xbox 360, and happy that I did.

    • ronald mcdonald

@mrbill I did the same exact thing. I had the ps3 for a while then got sick of it so I got a 360 much more satisfied

  • WTF

    Who cares. Android rulez.

  • Davis

Jesus. Are people REALLY still fighting over which is better? That’s SOOOOOO 2007.

  • jay hernandez

lol.. preference is not being a fanboy… get over it… both systems rock end of story!!! true gamers k now this!!!

I’m still with my 120GB Slim that I bought for super cheap, no need to upgrade.

Not even sure if I’d really use the Move functionality.

  • Thereal b

I have a Ps3 slim 120GB I love my playstation I went from an Xbox to my ps3 the only thing I have to complain about is the fact that you cant listen to music during games on the console. for example even in games like grand theft auto where even the first xbox let u listen to a user radio with music u had on ur box ps3 has nothing like this at all. Whats the hold up sony
