Apple releases updated iMacs, new product Magic Trackpad

Breaking

When the Apple Store went down this morning, we were expecting to see several things: an updated Mac Pro, an updated iMac, and a new 27-inch cinema display. Well, the Store is back… and here’s what the gang in Cupertino came up with:

  • iMac — Both the 21.5-inch and 27-inch models have received a fairly significant processor bump. The 21.5-inch iMac will be available with a 3.06 GHz or 3.20 GHz Core i3 processor, the 27-inch model will also be available with the 3.20 GHz Core i3 as well as a 2.8 GHz Core i5 quad-core offering. All models will come standard with 4 GB of RAM, at least a 500 GB hard drive, and will have a hand-full of configurable options if ordered online; including a Core i7 processor.
  • Magic Trackpad — Rumored some time ago, the Magic Trackpad allows you to click, scroll, and swipe on your desktop machine just as you would on your laptop. The device is 80% larger than the trackpad on the Macbook Pro and runs on two AA batteries. Here’s Apple’s take on the new device: “Magic Trackpad gives you a whole new way to control what’s on your Mac desktop computer. When you perform gestures, you actually interact with what’s on your screen. You feel closer to your content, and moving around feels completely natural. Swiping through pages on screen is just like flipping through pages in a magazine, and inertial scrolling senses the momentum in your fingers as you move up and down a page.” The device ships in 24-hours and is priced at $69.
  • Battery Charger — An Apple branded AA battery charger was also released today, for… you know, environmental reasons and stuff. Not to much to report on it, but it looks cute.

There you have it, let us know what you think. Anyone going to be busting out the credit card today?

Apparently they are releasing the 27″ Cinema Display and a refresh of the Mac Pro (with 12 cores of processing).

I have no plans to buy. Was not interesting.

Nothing to see here, move along.

  • Mac

Great… Now I have to see an article in a week about how many magic trackpads were sold over the weekend and how there are no more priority wait lists.

  • Zapote21

What? Its an Apple product! EVERYONE should want one, JUST because its Apple… no matter how behind the times, or lacking in specs, or useless it is (insert sarcasm, Ipad, and Iphone here)

  • yoshi

The hatebois are strong in this thread.

    • Jeff Mitchell

Because it’s a boring product, and you’ve been able to get similar hardware for years now. This one just has a media blitz.

But, it’ll get the interest of people who still haven’t figured out that you can scroll on web pages by hitting Page Up/Page Down.

Weren’t those processors out a couple month ago. Correct me if I am wrong. As we go along old processors become cheap right. Then why is the Mac same price as it was for a core 2 duo. I know it’s apple. Please someone tell me what are we paying for.

    • zephxiii

You are paying to have something pretty to use……

    • serpentor

Because Apple likes to keep the same price points for their products.

    • bonesb

And we’re paying for the incessant critical whining by haters. Too many of the haters aren’t getting laid…

  • zephxiii

Lets all hold hands and feel special together!!! all because of new apple products!!! lolol

  • Jbrown

Zep you jack ass what’s new about just upping hardware. The outside design is the same. Does it fly. It’s the same design. Just hardware what planet yu from.

  • serpentor

Comes standard with Core i3… SO LAME.

I’m still waiting for Apple to own up to their design defect in my 2006 iMac.

    • Yeah

dude its 2010… get over it like everyone else haha

  • Jbrown

Seperntor same price point and those hardware are cheap on the market. So your saying that apple selling old hardware expensive and néw hardware same price as new hardware.

  • Jbrown

Correction same price as the old hardware. I am not hating. I just don’t like seeing people getting orgy for just a hardware up. Plus a i3 cost about 129 dollars. How much does apple pay for one of them old cheap. Bout 50 dollars I am must say.

I think the new product is just great. The trackpad is especially wonderful, and when the new apple tv comes out it will also function as a remote / pointer device for that as well.

Apple has the best track pads bar none and now desktop users get them as well.

      Whoops, wrong BGR article. Apologies.

BTW the batteries and charger are good to go as well.

I don’t mind the track pad it’s cool and every thing. It’s nothing to die about. It does the same thing as a trackpad on a notebook. The battery um we already have rechargeable battery in this world. It’s just good to see that apple is environmental friendly.

  • http://www.helixzone.net helix2301

The Mac Pro is so nice buy the price is way to high the track pad is a nice touch.

  • T Man

A battery charger? Really? Especially when comparable chargers are about 1/3 less in price, like the Sanyo eneloop

If you can’t afford it, don’t buy it. No sense in making fun of people who can afford this stuff. “Stupid idiot bought a Riva Yacht? Those things are terrible. So modern and comfortable. I hate those.”

  • Gag

I’m disappointed in Apple today. No USB 3.0 ports, no Blu-Ray, no HDMI port on the new iMacs. They BARELY updated the iMacs. They changed out the CPU’s and GPU’s and that’s about it. I think the battery charger is cool but I’ll have to find out more about the magic trackpad. I’m really let down by this update though. They are really playing it safe and it’s unfortunate.

    • Yeah

THERE will never be blu ray on an apple product… I REPEAT never. If you think there will be then you are out of touch with this company.

The majority of people do not want to watch blu ay on there computer.

The majority of computer with blu ray suck.. seriously they do. don’t even try to act like they as good as a blu ray player.

There are attachments you can get for blu ray. So if you edit videos and what not you can still out put on it.

ALSO, apple is going toward HD streaming online… with there already kick ass displays this would be awesome. No need for a blu ray player to run hot and noisy when they can do it efficiently via the internet.

*I will take well made computers over plastic PC any day of the week.

      • Yeah

Also… I need to go over my grammar before I hit submit =D

      • Gag

How do Blu-Ray players on computers suck? They play Blu-Rays in 1080p…..and that’s all they are supposed to do. So I’m not sure why you’re defending Apple here. I don’t know who you’re citing, in terms of most people not wanting to watch Blu-Rays on their computer. I know I do. I know millions of Blu-Rays are sold and exist as a thriving product ecosystem. It’s the home theater standard, instead of that HD-lite crap that is on iTunes. Mac OS X does not really support Blu-Ray, so attachment drives don’t actually work. They have to build support for it into the OS. Maybe we’ll see Blu-Ray support in OS X.7, I’m hopeful. You may be right about Apple not wanting to support Blu-Ray but that doesn’t make it a good idea.

And what’s the excuse about no HDMI and USB 3.0? Apple’s just wrong on not including this. Once they included HDMI on the mac mini, they should have just standardized it on their products. They always embrace new standards first. They should have put USB 3.0 in their products too. Just lazy. They really mailed it in this year.

Trackpad could have some potential depending on how it’s implemented, but honestly.. “Magic Trackpad”… that sounds like something made by Fisher Price for children aged 5 and under…

Call me old fashioned, but I’d prefer a mouse over a trackpad any day, whether it’s magic or not.

    • Yeah

negative. Track pads on other computers may require a mouse… but not apple.

using a mouse doesn’t feel right.

    What’s with Apple and magick?

  • PejHod
