DROIDForums.net is reporting that Verizon Wireless has given the end-of-life nod to the following devices:

  • Gateway LT2016U (netbook)
  • Motorola Devour and DROID
  • Nokia Twist
  • BlackBerry Tour 9630
  • Samsung Knack, Smooth, Intensity, and Saga

Looks like Big Red is making room in their handset lineup for some of the new hotness due out this summer. Anything on this list surprise you?

I admit I am a little confused, as the Droid is the first smart phone I have had. Does this mean we won’t get froyo? Or they just aren’t making them anymore? Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

End-of-life, as in they are not producing more and will not be selling them in stores once current stock runs out. Your warranty will remain. Whatever plans Motorola has for supporting the device are their own, so if they said Froyo is coming I’d still believe them.

I am holding on to my Droid until the D2 launches; the X is interesting but the larger screen still carrying the same resolution is an epic fail in my eyes. The entire point of having more glass is so you can cram more dots in there. :) If the D2 is faster and has a keyboard, I will be happy.

I went to Verizon today to play with the Droid X.

I agree that more dots would be better… but the EVO has basically the same resolution too. All Androids are roughly 800×480. The screen is larger, but not so large that the pixels are blown up. You still can’t see them.

It’s the same way if you watch a 27″ TV or a 32″ TV. It’s the same picture… just bigger.

You can tell the screen is larger when you use the landscape on-screen keyboard… but the phone never feels too big in your hand. That’s what I was worried about. The Droid X is only 2mm wider than my current Blackberry. It’s taller, of course… but not unmanageable.

The Droid X is a lot thinner on its thinnest part… but even the thicker part at the top is still thinner than my Blackberry. These were all welcome surprises.

Don’t worry, the Droid will get Froyo. It’s not far from being released. Maybe just a couple more weeks.

Even though VZW may not carry the Droid, it will be produced and sold on 3rd tier carriers. One CDMA regional carrier is still selling brand new Motorola Q phones.

  • Lildrummerboy

If you guys have access to that…how do you not have the new rebate form that starts on the 18th with about 6 new phones on there..?

  • jimd

This has not been confirmed. Everyone needs to relax and wait and see how things pan out. Once LTE comes out we will want newer phones anyway.

  • egg street

Actually I am surprised by this list and the fact that the BB Storm 2 isn’t on it…unless it has already been EOLd, but since I saw it in the store today I’m assuming it hasn’t been.

    • badonkadonk

RIM hasn’t launched a replacement for the S2 yet. Whereas they launched the 9650 which clearly replaces the 9630.

  • Mike

That’s great abandon the droid that hasn’t even been out a year and was supposed to be a flagship device. That’s why verizon blows, Turn their backs so quickly on the droid.

    • acquaz10

Its just basically being refreshed. You know have the Droid 2 and Droid X. I don’t understand why you’re angry.

    • Lunchbox

Mike, unless you are, in fact, a self-aware Motorola Droid that hasn’t been shipped yet, I don’t get why in the world you’re angry. It’s a phone, man.

  • Protegès

    @Mike

I don’t mean to insult you, but you must be retarded.

They aren’t abandoning the droid, they are bringing upgraded versions in. Its the difference between a 2009 BMW and a 2010. Once a new one is released the manufacturers stop producing the old one, and the dealers sell the old ones until they are all gone.

I was actually surprised to see the twist on the list.

This Droid has the tiniest letters and numbers, I have ever used. The Droid never shuts off. Put in your purse, pocket, the phone turns right back on. It is expensive for what you receive. It offers way to much, you become anti-social stuck between playing with toys. Always installing or updates available. It is the worst, how about when the number sheet is on to select different options, and your face starts pressing all those key, then you hear, Th Number Is Not Available, Please Try Again Later, then the person you were talking too hangs up,and thats that, redial!!!

  • jam429

Everybody always complained that Verizon had crappy phones. This is what they have to do to give people what they want. Clear out old stuff make way for new hotness, I for one am happy

    • LCW

yeah – they have to make room for non rootable phones like the Droid X… and kill any sort of ‘hackability’ from their lineup…

actually a feature in the Droid X (eFuse) that will brick it…. nice…

      • SupAll

Please do not quote the garbage that is gizmodo. It’s already been stated that previous Droids have the same technology and that all it really does is encrypts the bootloader, making it more difficult to gain root access.

  • LCW

wow… not even a year… i knew androids had short shelf life… but not THIS short!! :-s

figures though… it is afterall vzw…. they’ll screw anyone over…

  • bobby

    not the samsung knack!!

  • nofan

@ jimd — confirmed just FYI. There is a bunch in stock though around the US. No more shipments from manuf.

  • J$

I love my Driod, got in day 1…. I looked at the specs for D2 provided in the leaked catalog and to be honest it doesn’t make me look forward to it… they kept raising the bar until the D2… doesn’t seem better than Incredible or X… what gives!!??

  • Lunchbox

I love how people are getting all up in arms about this. “Oh, no… Verizon is trying to make money off of us and get us to buy new phones!” No kidding. Last I checked, THEY ARE A BUSINESS. Not a non-profit. It’s not your right to have the newest, hottest phone every 6 months, you have to pay extra for it. Stop being children.

Unless you actually are children. If you are, go outside and play.

The Motorola Droid hasn’t even been out a year..How did it make the EOL list already?? This clearly indicates that Verizon is about how much $$$$$$$$ they can make on a device (Hint:) Droid X & Droid Incredible already Sold Out due to shortages… They influence u to buy the new Hot! Device then Declared backorders right before a another device is released. ….This is becoming a regular 2010″ Summer practice by Carriers and Manufactures. ….

    • NicolaeTM

Well i’d rather not hear you Moto Droid people complaining. The Droid Eris was EOL’d months ago and they came out on the same date lol.

  • Bob

Uh oh… what happens if my Droid kicks the bucket? Are they keeping stock for repairs or does Asurion handle that?

  • tristan

Motorola droid EOL? when people find out the droid X is locked up tighter than the iPhone people are going to want the good ol’ droid.
