Sprint stops pushing EVO 4G update, will resume shortly

evo-ota-update

It appears as though Sprint has stopped pushing out the over-the-air EVO 4G update released to its customers just yesterday. In an official statement, Sprint wrote:

While the vast majority of consumers successfully downloaded and installed the most recent HTC EVO 4G software update, we have received a handful of reports from customers having some issues with the update. In light of this, HTC and Sprint have decided to temporarily halt distribution of this software release until we can investigate further. We expect to be able to resume software updates shortly.

Shortly after the updates release, rumors began flying around the internet about “bricked” handsets after the new code had been applied. True or not, it looks like Sprint isn’t taking any chances with its flagship handset.

Well this sucks!!!! Not that it affects me in anyway, but why can’t they test the updated b4 they let u update???? Lol

    • Churl

Test? That’s what users are for.

Now, if this had been ATT, “rumors” would have been replaced with “reports of”, and “bricked” would not have been placed in quotes. The paragraph would have ended with something witty like “We’re sure Apple is somehow to blame”.

    • Doll

The update was tested and worked just fine for most users. The problem kicked in when people started flashing the update twice without reading the pop up accompanied with the update notification. The bricking issues could have easily been avoided.

  • Reality

Well its not really there fault, some idiots tried to install it twice for “fun”.

Sprint has really stepped up lately, they are addressing all of their customers issues, its a pleasant change

  • Rick James

Its not the customers fault. The stupid thing should be smart enough to KNOW not to apply the same update over well the exact same update..

Maybe put a check in it HTC? Fail!!

What if the bricked phones are rooted phones?

  • EvoMan

Seriously how hard is it to install something kids ?

  • JB

I had problems too, said no update. All I had to do was a batt pull, try again it was there. Read this Sprint!!! One power cycle and its there. BGR pass it on to your Sprint connects.

WOW! Where are all the comments complaining and bitching about this? If this was a apple post all those android nutboys would be on here flaming apple/att, and they don’t even have one. But one thing wrong with their precious phone they clam up and dont say shit turn their eyes and pretend their phone is still perfect.

    • Doll

I swear your post sounds like you typed everything in reverse for laughs. I swear that’s how Apple fans act with their Jesus phone. I guess you can say this situation is no different from when Apple released iOS4 for older iPhones and there shitloads of problems that everyone made excuses for.

      • Mercado

Indeed and Amen! All those iPhone retarts sipping their mocha chai lattes drive me nuts. iPhone is a fashion symbol and even worse, a status symbol. But we all know the truth. These morons can barely pay the bills to have a new phone with inferior service.

Androids kind of new to the game, Apples been in it for three plus years now.

If your the top dog, or alpha, expect to defend your position, if you fail to, or it does not bear the scrutiny, then you or it, shouldn’t be top dog.

False prophets, less then top-dogs, will be torn apart by the challengers.
Pretty simple, no need to get hurt about it lol.

I work at Best Buy Mobile, and we’ve seen in my mid sized city at least 2 totally bricked Evos as of yesterday night.

It’s hard to know if we are seeing more than the rest of the country, but assuming we are not then there are likely thousands of bricked Evo phones.

Sprint saying a “handful” of complaints is misleading.

I updated my Evo just fine yesterday morning. I then checked to see if there were any more updates later that night and the same update came up. I just canceled it since I noticed it was the same version. I’ve been all over the web today and most of the brick phones are coming from doing the update twice.

I still don’t understand why the phone or sprint for that matter does not recognize as the handset already having the latest version…

  • Jason Duncan

i updated mine no problems, in fact the battery life has increased tremendously. anyone else experencing much longer battery life?

  • wdc

Guys…get it straight. My phone went to bricktown. I performed my 1st update 10am yesterday… then checked for updates at 10:30pm (12 hours later)… Of which, one was shown as available. Performed update…. phone dead. Either HTC / Sprint did not pull the update as noted or after the 1st update the information is stored in the phone. Sprint states HTC controls the updates. That being said… I believe HTC was late to the party and did not pull effected update when stated.

Im one of the idiots who did the update twice wasnt even paying attention the shit popped up that there was another update available most software would recognize the duplicate so i just assumed, now im stuck with this beautiful paper wieght i love the way they put rumor this aint no damn rumor they agreed to do an exchange but they have nothing to exchange it with (out of stock everywhere) so in the end im back to my hero and have to wait till july 15th and they will give me the white one via best buy

i think people don’t know how to install updates. Why install an update twice when its the same update? People are always in a hurry and refuse to pay attention so if they bricked their phones its their fault. Plus besides the fact that most of the bricked phones where rooted!! I mean are you serious? Why update your phone if you rooted it? Duh!

    • mtsunami

Listen man WIPE THE BREAST MILK OFF UR MOUTH AND GROW UP get ur facts before u start talking first of all my phone wasnt rooted “people dont know how to do updates” do u know how stupid u sound i spoke to htc and they admit that they screwed up with the update so calm down, this happened to me yesterday morning i think anybody updating today will be fine they fixed the issue

  • hateraide

I don’t know what people are doing to jack this up….i put the update on mine right away…it works flawless.

  • slam22

I just checked and it appears that the update is now available again.

  • corandog

I just have a question…what do we look for (version number, etc.) to make sure we have the updated version after installation?

  • mark

i just got a message right now saying that there’s an update for my evo i think they fixed it…hell yeah,,mine is rooted i hope nothing happens its 30.2 mbs i think they fixed the problem

  • Petnard

Had no problem updating my phone the first day it was available. Everything works fine.

  • SD

I just updated my Evo also. No issues. My download was 30.2 mb as well.

  • Dan C

I updated it and it seems to have fixed a number of problems…on another note, I do think that Sprint has stepped up their customer service as a whole, but I did not have a great experience in trying to diagnose the sporadic restart issue. They had no idea about the issue, then the only remedy they had was a hard reset, to a phone that was only 2 weeks old…they had no idea that an update was coming or that it might fix this issue…I am still keeping my fingers crossed that it actually will.

After this update, I can no longer rely to email messages over the internet because ‘can only have one pop-up window open’. Sprint suggested I use Browser HD but that didn’t help. Maybe should have bought an iPhone.
