Chrome Overtakes Safari for First Time to Claim Third Place in US Internet Browser Market – StatCounter

- Market still led by Internet Explorer

BOSTON & DUBLIN–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Google’s internet browser Chrome has overtaken Apple’s Safari in the US for the first time on a weekly basis according to StatCounter, the company which provides free website analytics. The firm’s research arm StatCounter Global Stats reports that for the week beginning 21 June Chrome overtook Safari to claim third place in the US browser market.

“This is quite a coup for Google as they have gone from zero to almost 10% of the US market in under two years,” commented Aodhan Cullen, CEO, StatCounter. “There is a battle royal going on between Google and Apple in the internet browser space (Chrome v Safari) as well as in the mobile market (Android v iPhone).” Chrome with 8.97% took third place in the US browser market ahead of Safari with 8.88%. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer still dominates the US Internet browser market with 52%, followed by Firefox (28.5%).

Globally Chrome has been well ahead of Safari for some time with 9.4% of the market compared to 4% for Safari. Microsoft’s Internet Explorer has 53% of the global market followed by Firefox on 31%. The data is based on an analysis of 3.6 billion page views (874 million from the US) for the week 21 to 27 June 2010 collected from the StatCounter network of over three million websites.

    I’ll chime in…

I switched from Firefox to Chrome because of the speed improvements. Most of the extensions that I relied on in FF seem to have been ported to Chrome. That really was the only thing holding me back.

    • element4life3

Exactly the same reason I switched. And I used to be the most hardcore Firefox promoter back in the day. I would probably stare at myself in disbelief if I were to travel back in time and talk to myself. But seriously, Chrome is awesome!

  • JMR

I’m glad to see Safari ousted from the top 3 after the continuous disappointments (even ended up removing it from my Mac). I’m still having a hard time switching to Chrome though.

the situation is not as simple as u are stating it.

Google makes money on search and wants to be the default search engine for your web browser…

Google makes (or plans to make) money from their other web initiatives (gmail/cal/google docs/etc) the better the browser, the better those apps.

Think about a super restricted slow browser..that would make google docs SUCK…so inorder to compete with installed apps + inorder to compete with other web apps….google wants to make sure the web (the browser) is fast, safe, and innovating!

      ur welcome.

I think you have the wrong post lol

    Good morning tech talent pool.
    Q. how does this help companies advance &/or generate revenue?
I don’t see the direct connection between a company building the browser user base & generating profit….
I don’t see ads sold on the browser page – Is it to have the search bar embedded?
    thanks in advance

    • The Hulk

If Google doesn’t put the ads in the browser then i guess they are gathering data on your web habits etc while you’re on the internet. This strengthens their ad service by making it more customized for you. Just a guess. But my guess is as good as yours.

    • Drew

Chrome does not directly generate the revenue by itslef but if you are using Chrome then more than likely you will use the default search engine which is Google. Google search engine and ads doled by it still account for companies 96% of revenue.

Also, if it becomes an established brand they can more easily monetize when Chrome OS hits the market.

    • Kai Tamkun

Chrome is far more standards-compliant and easier to develop for than any other browser.
If Chrome were the only browser, as it should be, then web application development would be a lot quicker and a lot less costly.
Also, if support for Internet Explorer is necessary, then it makes the experience worse for users of other browsers if they dumb down the entire app for IE support.

As for Google, they pay other browser vendors such
as the Mozilla Corporation and Opera Software ASA to have Chrome as the default browser. If there are less users of those browsers, they don’t have to pay as much.

      • Kai Tamkun

In addition, more market share for Chrome strengthens Google’s already strong brand.

chrome sucks firefox ftw chrome crashes on me too much with just only a few tabs unlike firefox

    • elijahblake

chrome crashes?? I’ve been using it for a couple of years and i don’t even remember it ever crashing.. Now I’m sure at some point it has, but not enough for me to remember.

I’m in IT for a company and i set up people’s pc’s/laptops and i always put Chrome on there and tell them to use it and see if they like it. They always love it.

      • jet

Well, I agree chrome is fast. I have used it. It crashes too often. Firefox is better as of today.
Whether you work for IT company or not it does not matter, I have plenty of IT friends who are absolutely DUMB when it comes to computers even though they could be good in whatever they do (SAP, ETL etc).

  • Rick James

Been using Chrome for a long time now!!

  • jonathan

Nice, I use Firefox first then Chrome as my preferred browsers on my Pc and Imac.

    Posted from BGR Mobile (iPhone).

  • bob

if I had to use IE or firefox I could get only half as much done because they’re incrediby slow by comparison..
businesses cant afford to keep using them..
most of them just dont know it yet

  • Mo_Chedda

chrome is the sh!t, i love it! In a few more years it will over take firefox and internet explorer!!!

  • Dream

Safari is still better Speed wise and options, have fun knowing that google (worlds largest information gatherer) is recording every site your own and storing your information.

    • Mankato

Dude, Google is not the only company that is ‘recording every site”. Safari and IE doing it as well. Google is in the same ad selling business as Microsoft and now Apple ( with iAD and all). It is just that Google is better at it.

If you like to live in Apple’s La La land and let Steve Jobs gather all your personal info while crying wolf about Google’s gathering info so be it.

      • Dream

In no way im in Apple Land its jus when all of the privacy issues with google it make you think

  • Shumdit

I like safari, but chrome is the fastest browser I have used on my pc’s. I have not tried chrome on a Mac yet.
