evo-4g-ctia

It’s been exactly 10 weeks and 3 days since it was announced at CES 2010, but it’s finally here: The HTC EVO 4G is now available nationwide from Sprint. In exchange for two years and two C-notes, Sprint reps will be more than happy to hand over the hottest phone of 2010 that isn’t at the center of a criminal investigation. Just keep in mind that you’ll be paying a $10 premium for data whether or not you have local 4G coverage. And yeah, we know the policy is lame, but at least it’s unlimited data, right?

when Android gets more polished apps and better IM clients I may switch over, but until then, no way! I had a droid for 5 days and it just didn’t make me happy like my iPhone does. None of the Android messaging clients are even close to how good Beejive is on iPhone. Also, there’s not nearly as many GOOD games or quality apps. And with the EVO the 8mp camera with “HD video recording” sucks due to HTC’s awful compression settings. The Android fanboys are A LOT more disgusting and rude then us Apple fans. I’m no fanboy but the way you tech nerds fight about phones like their your sexual partner that’s cheating on you is disgusting.

I just switched to Sprint & the EVO and while I really like the phone I have to agree with you… having used an iPhone the Android apps are simply not as functional, elegant, or user-friendly as what’s available for the iPhone.

      • bob

you mean they’re not dumbed-down enough for you?

      • Brent

Oh bob, that comment just made my day!

      • joshua

no they’re not ELEGANT enough. and the fact that my comment got “seriously disliked” proves that you Android freaks are snobs. All you do is trash Apple instead of enjoy your own product.

      • destardi

There is so much immaturity in your posts, and that is why they’re downranked.

Give specific examples of apps; all of the ones that I cared about on the iPhone I have with Android.

The hardware of the latest Android based phones beats the iPhone hands down, AND Android O/S actually lets YOU be the driver, and not Jobs.

Video? You’re whining about video when the iPHone didn’t even have that option? AHAHAHAHA

Where’s your widgets, and don’t you hate it when Slacker is interrupted just for a text message from your mommy?

  • Nana

I couldn’t be more agree with what u had to say. iPhone is always going to be the best phone in the smartphone market.

  • bob

    4g that’s barely faster att/tmobile 3g

…and they expect me to change from my $50/month plan to and $80/month plan to upgrade to this phone…
    (same data same minutes…)

Tell ya what Sprint.. take your phone an shove it

    • Celz

What AT&T plan is comparable?? Your either an employee or a liar..

      • the og boy genius

AT&T now offers 7.2Mbps (about 2-3Mbps actual) now in some places and is going to 21Mbps by the end of the year (I know, it shocked everyone but they have a pile of cash from all the iPhones now to do whatever they want), plus the newer iPhones (3Gs and the upcoming model) are tuned by AT&T’s hardware engineer to be better phones. Oh yeah, you can also talk on the phone and surf at the same time on AT&T. Now Sprint 4G (actually, it’s CLEAR which is 51% owned by Sprint) is really 1.2Mbps-5Mbps and most of the time hovers around 1.5Mbps-2.5Mbps. Read Gizmodo’s review of the Evo before you buy and note it doesn’t come with Android 2.2 (it comes with 2.1 retrofitted with a lot of crap that will take a long time to be ripped out to make room for 2.2) ..oh and btw, this post is done on 4G, which is easily verified by the site manager looking at my IP.

      • Con

You stated the theoretical top speeds for AT&T and then stated the real world speeds for Sprint, apples and oranges maybe??? Also what good is a phone that cant make phone calls do to them being dropped? Let’s have AT&T fix that issue and also expand its regular 3G before pushing for faster speeds.

The “lot of crap” that the EVO is “retrofitted” with, yea that would be HTC Sense which has proven time and again that it is one of the smoothest and nicest OS layovers for both Win Mob and Android so I have no clue where you get the evidence to say its crap.

On the subject of 2.2, you say the Evo not having 2.2 is like a deal breaker. NO phone has an official release of 2.2 yet not even Gogle’s own N1 so its not lacking anything to anyother android phone also it will be top priority to get the 2.2 update as well since it is such a hyped and capable phone that HTC can pull big $ from…. fin

The iphone is NOT the best phone in the smartphone market… it is simply the most consumer friendly and best marketed… That being said i will switch over to the evo in July when my upgrade kicks in. Because i think that android is the way to go. Open ended os vs apples iron fisted tactics on there os is no comparison

  • JB

$10 is a good deal. VZW already released a statement (from their CEO) there will be a charge for their LTE service. Until the market is saturated with 4G and 5G is being talked about, get used to paying a premium on any network. Their is a huge cost in deploying new networks.

    • Celz

Honestly the $10 fee has more to do with the Evo’s hardware.. AT&T and VZW charge seperate data plans on their top tier phones.. Thats how the iPhone 3Gs and Droid are so cheap.. Since Sprint doesn’t do that and we all know how well the $350 Touch Pro 2 did Sprint had to charge a small extra fee on the Evo to get it under 200 bucks..

  • darth bud

Lol at anyone that buys this phone. For one your paying wayyyy too much for the service. 4g is a gimmick, you’ll have to pray they bhave 4g in ur area or maybe get it before the end of this decade. And of course this phone is going to have a shit load of issues. Battery shitty? Yup, phone freezes? YUP! Bad recepction, more then likely. This is like buying a ranger rover, yah its expensive, looks expensive, looks nice. But hands down worst maitence/turnaround in the market. Thank god for buyers remorse!

    • badchad

Darth, how long have you been using the phone, and what’s your experience been with the following: battery life, reception, freezing etc?

Or are you completely talking out of your ass?

      • Jon Tsujimura

Remember caps only apply to 3g

      • Jon Tsujimura

        replied to wrong post sorry

    • Chadstone Fieldingworth

hahahahaha, picked mine up this morning & I must say that you couldn’t be more wrong. The only issue is obviously the battery but it’s been about the same as my Hero. Not great but about on par with other smartphones.

As far as freezing and bad reception, don’t be ignorant. Every review I’ve read and now personal experience says that this phone is screaming fast and your “more than likely” assumption that the reception will be bad is not only unfounded, it’s just retarded.

  • Don Louie

KennyB123, the only way your famliy plan would be $70 more is if all seven lines have an Evo. If anybody has all smartphone fam plan T Mobile or prepay is the route to go cheaper. Confuscious, AT&T has a max of 7.2 that is rarely ever hit while WiMax is 14 but 4 – 8 is norm. T Mobile 21 max is really 2 – 5 in real life, the $10 fee is not more when caps are factored in.

    • Jon Tsujimura

Remember Caps only apply to 3g service

    • the og boy genius

That’s not accurate. WiMax norm is 1.5-2.5Mbps, though sometimes we get lucky and scream along at 3-6Mbps during odd hours…at least in Las Vegas. AT&T data can be used at the same time you’re on the phone…and they’re rolling out 21Mbps nationwide now. TMobile in USA is a tiny network using a big company’s name and is not to be compared to AT&T, Sprint or Verizon by anyone with adequate knowledge.

Aaaannnd… another Android device invades the market. Where’s MS in all of this? Don’t mind it’s on Sprint, VZ, AT&T, or T-Mo. It’s like they’re all Android all the time. :-)

  • Mitch Cumstein

Stopped in a Sprint to see EVO 4G. I’m not eligible for my Premier upgrade until October, but the device is pretty stunning in person due to the size and clarity of the screen.

It is pretty big and a little heavy though. I’d love to have that speed/power/features in a slightly smaller/lighter version. Some people might sprain a finger reaching all of that screen real estate.

Maybe the Incredible is a better form factor?

Or an Incredible with a TP2 keyboard?

Of course, I’d love to have a bit larger Pre or a less AT&T-operated and fully-multitasking iPhone or a Blackberry OS that doesn’t feel antiquated too, so there’s no perfect device.

    • the og boy genius

The Pre is no moe…tho it’s ghost will live on in printers and couch-surfing stuff from HP. The fully-multitasking iPhone is virtually here…it has restrictions over the way Android and desktop computers work, but they’re to keep you from bogging down your phone with a bunch of poorly written crud that neither you nor Apple have any idea what’s really going on, or if it’s being done the right way to be the least invasive and most secure.

Google says it created Android to keep the world from being dominated by one man’s vision. If you are a Salieri-type or don’t know who that is, then go for Android and wear a T-Shirt letting us know what’s for lunch.

I could have sworn that CES was in January. I think one of us needs to get a new abacus…

Sprint…? BLECH. I’ll pass. Poor Coverage in my area, and even worse customer service…
Company just purchased a new Blackberry from them; new phone and number. 2 days after activation, their collections dept. started calling, and asking for “Mary xxxx” because of an unpaid bill. WTF? The person using the phone said it’s a new phone and service. Oh sorry, we’ll fix that right away. 3 days later they started calling again…LOL…Great company….

  • nore

well i ordered mine and am willing to give it a try.im switching from BB 5.0 to andriod if i dont like it i will return it and purchase a 9650 and will never leave BB again so good luck HTC/andriod to win me over

    • the og boy genius

you’ll not get your rebate if you don’t keep service activated for 30 days and, of course, after 30 days, you can’t return it without a penalty.

  • Wondering

Just wondering…why would Sprint charge me $10 more for the “4G experience” when they don’t even have 4G service in my entire state?

    • Celz

Just be glad Sprint’s “4G” charge is less than the other guys “3G” charge..

Seriously though the extra ten bucks just makes sure the phone is under 200 bucks because selling the highest speced US phone ever for 69.99 a month unl everything including video conferencing, TV, 4G, mobile calls, GPS, text, and pic mail is insane..

Sprint doesn’t love us anymore than VZW does.. So they are charging a lil more considering what you are getting just like the iPhone.. This has lil too do with 4G the average EVO user doesnt want and wont use 4G anyway..

      • the og boy genius

highest speed ever phone …until Monday, lol.

  • Yo

its a cool phone i love the look but way too big, I know everyones not gonna agree but i prefer a more compact smartphone.

    • Celz

for a while I used a small dumbphone with my smartphone and I loved it.. Having an old razr2 with an Evo would be the best setup.. I just cant justify paying that much.. I refuse to pay over $100 a month on my phone bill

    • MikeD

Look into the Docker “Mobile” pants with the larger pockets for gadgets. http://tinyurl.com/24uqfgr

Oh ya the sprint store I went to was crazy lol a whole 10 people were in line. Went to the other one near me at there most popular mall around me and that store had 15 more people in line. Crazy! Compared to the 250-300 when I got my 3gs. Which was fine with me as I didn’t have to wait longing line to see what the evo was like.  I went in and saw the phone. Pretty cool but little too big for a phone. The reps there said the biggest problem for me was there’s no 4g in the area I also found out that the battery sucks. I also found it a bit sluggish and choppy. But I think it’s the android os not the phone it self. Guess I’ll be waiting to see what apple has up there sleeve Monday.
