BlackBerry 9300 outed by RIM

We hate to break your heart in case you were thinking the BlackBerry 9300, the latest BlackBerry smartphone to be outed by UAProf, would RIM’s next big thing, but reality paints a different picture. Based on specifications and from what we’re starting to hear to hear from connects now that the information has slipped out in a semi-official fashion, it sounds like the 9300 will pick up where the current Curve 8500 Series left off and add in a few features. Regrettably the display will be limited to an eye-straining resolution of 320×240, but the addition of 802.11n Wi-Fi and W-CDMA aren’t exactly anything to scoff at when you’re dealing with what is a dependable, and more importantly truly affordable, communications device. We’re still waiting to hear what we’re in for in terms of the processor, memory, camera and other odds and ends (the OS is currently listed as 5.0), but we don’t think such things will be able to remain as secret much longer.

    As expected

RIM caters to the whole smart-phone market, not simply producing better and more expensive models.

They release multiple models for different users. Which why we got the Bold 9700, then the Curve 8530… not everyone needs HD display, and 1 Ghz processor.

    • Jayhammy

I couldn’t agree more with Tdot. That’s what makes Blackberry so great–high-end, middle-end, and low-end devices. Yes, they need to do more with their stale OS, etc., but they’re a great phone. That’s why they’re still the #1 best-selling smartphones in North America.

    • rederikus

Yup. It’s called market research and it is why Blackberrys are still #1 and still the best.

Sure they need a new browser (in the works) and they need to make it easier to write apps for their OS but basically the OS is dead solid and has had multi-tasking for years.

  • Common

Once again, another outdated Blackberry release. I’m dropping my Tour for the Evo when it comes out.

    • Sevenmack

Sure, you will. Sure. You’ll be on this new BB as soon as you hear disappointing news and reviews about the EVO. Because people who talk like this are generally thinking with their brain.

By the way: Where’s you’re latest track, Common?

    • rederikus

This is not outdated at all. The corporate market wilbe all over this device. It is not aimed at the high end user. It is designed to fit into a particular niche market called Corporate America.

  • DubYa

The photo for this post reminds me why I switched to a different phone from a Blackberry.

  • rusty

RIM’s roadmap seems pretty clear to me. Get out of the high end game and focus on the mass market/enterprise.

    Sad really.

  • Jellybeans

Whoa, wait a min. Did BGR seriously just link a story from Crackberry? OMG I can see the light lol

    • Brandon

      Yea, where have you been?

  • Shelton

I love me 8530… Ive went 8330-> 9530->9630-> 8530 the only thing i wish it had would be autofocus.. otherwise its awesome.

    • AJF

They must love customers like you. And if they can hold on to a few million just like you, they can stay in business too.

Wow how exciting !!! Yawwwwwn ! Wake me up when rim eitger goes under or some how joins the 21st century of iphones nokias and androids.

If u think abou. Rim is real shitty deal, the amount of money it cost for the internet/web service dollar for dollar c the difference what rim gives u and what iphone android nokia gives u. Night and day !

  • Pepe

Wake me up when rim eitger goes under or some how joins the 21st century of iphones nokias and androids.

    So true

  • AJF

RIM is doomed. They are relics of the past. They release phone after phone that looks the same and does the same as all their other phones. And their OS sucks. When the most asked for feature is a way to more easily do a battery pull then there’s something seriously wrong. The new HTC Android phones coming to Verizon and eventually the iPhone will bury them.

    • Tdot34

Its a smartphone, of course they are all going to do the same things as their other models.

Plus how the hell can you say all their phones are the same… umm lets see Pearl, Pearl Flip, Storm, and Bold/Curve…. yep all the same design.

When will you people realize BlackBerry’s are for BUSINESS, they are not for surfing the net watching youtube and checking out lolcats on the subway.

They have 42.1% market share and still growing… yep they are doomed.

      • AJF

Yea I have one of those Storms, you want it? How about the Storm2 ? Another big FAIL. What about their OS, ever try using the BB browser? Believe me, they are going downhill.

Come back later this year when you’ll see how their market share has eroded because they are mired in the same old and outdated form factor and OS. They were the only smart phone about 2 years ago, now they have lots of competition and they are still operating as though they are the only game in town.

And I agree with you, they are made for business, their problem is that now about half their customer base is non-business. So they’re trying to appeal to both now and they’re failing at both. Do you think that Ka-Glom and Bubble Defense is for business users? Watch how they start to slide once all the kids’ are eligible for upgrades and start to dump their BB’s for Android phones and iPhones once they become available .

      • Tdot34

To each there own, I guess you are impressed by colorful OS widgets and phone designs. BB phones have the best reception, best battery life, best qwerty keyboard on the market, the best push email server, the best security and encryption and data compression so I can surf the same websites as you but use 1/6th the data.

I find OS 5.0 great, don’t have any problems, syncs, forwards, loads everything I need not sure what your beef is with it. Don’t like the look, download a theme.

I agree the Storm isn’t nearly as good as it should be and their browser sucks, but you can get Opera which works fine, or wait for Webkit to come out.

      • AJF

No I’d be more impressed with a phone that doesn’t need constant battery pulls rather than widgets. And I’ve seen little evidence that it’s the best at all the things you think they are best at . The point is, they are slow, lethargic company that continually turns out new phones, pretty much the same as all their others rather than keeping up with their competition. I’m sure they’ll still appeal to business users, but again, the market for non-business users is much larger, and they’ll slowly start losing what little they have of that market. And if you think they can’t take a huge nosedive because they’re such a success, take a look at Motorola. They owned the cell phone market years ago.

Check out the BB forums like Crackberry. You won’t find more BB lovers in one place, yet even there the comments are starting to echo mine. RIM is becoming a big joke .

        @Tdot34 : I agree with you

        @AJF :

You need to reassess your reasoning.

You accept the premise that RIM designs to address business users.

Under that, it is in RIM’s best interest to keep their phones as similar as possible from model to model, inside and out. Why? because any small business using blackberry will have to update and change, utilizing their time and money. Result is small changes over time.

in addition, if you accept this premise, then they probably are not interested in the non-business market as much as you think. A consistent hold on a market is better than a cult hold. Look at Apple vs. Android. Having one feature or one better ad can sway users from one to the other. That is risky. RIM is playing it safe in my opinion.

As for the battery pull statement, Android and Apple phones are designed as you said, for non business users. More importantly though, designed for users who cannot micro manage. The phones auto shutdown, sleep apps, close apps. Blackberry is designed to constantly run and keep running apps, so when the apple/android user picks up a blackberry and doesn’t shutdown programs. bam battery pull. User error.

And I find it funny how you list Motorola as the company that took a nosedive…That was temporary… ever heard of the Droid?

      • http://www.rossmanngroup.com Louis Rossmann

        They ignore small business.

I have more than one email account, and I want to be able to see IMAP folders for each one.

I want to be able to retain text messages & emails from customers on the device for search later when they WILL come in handy.

        I can’t on a BlackBerry.

  • cheech

nothing new, still going to try android.

    • AJF

      Ditto

  • Saif Rahman

I gotta agree with AJF. I LOVE(D) rim. but i gotta say, im so sick and tired of the same phone and OS over and over again. Motorola ruled the world with the razor, and where are they now? HTC, APPLE, Android are all valid RIM killers. They need to do something, cuz I am really thinking about jumping ship to a phone that doesnt have to be battery pulled every night, and can open a real webpage.

    • Tdot34

Funny how you bash RIM for the same phones and same OS… Yet you praise Apple, which hasn’t changed its Phone or OS in 3 years. Aside from updates that Jobbers releases to keep people interested. Just now it got multi-tasking (sort of), something RIM has had for many years!

I know RIM seems slow with coming out with updates, but that’s because everything it creates must meet is security and encryption standards… which takes time, lots of time. Winder why Appworld has the least amount of Apps when BB’s are the most popular phone…. developers have a hard time working with the security standards. They could let their phone be hackable in 12 seconds like Apple and come out with new stuff super quick, but that would negate the purpose of BB’s

    browser = fail

  • Rodney Johnson

Who cares? I am going to use my iPad as a phone.

  • jhuk

    @Tdot34,
how can you argue best is beyond me, not only does the browser suck, but their grand chief in charge of development mike lazarides admits their slow browsing and email downloading is by design because we should all be conserving bandwidth.

the bold had a shocking battery life, I know as I went through 3 6 months, the only people who still have storms have no choice.

I am not blackberry bashing and I agree they are designed for corporate America which they do pretty well but they are no means the best.

and before someone flames me for being an apple fan I have both Blackberry 8800 and an iPhone.

I Have Liked Blackberry for a minute now. I had the Curve 8330 and now have the 9630. To be honest with you im bored as hell with blackberry. I want a Droid! Hell I’d be happy with wifi. Who cares about 3g anymore still slow as hell! or i guess that could be Blackberry’s weak ass sauce of a browser
