Microsoft hints at Windows Mobile 7 announcement at MWC

Rumor

microsoft-windows-phone-logo

Yesterday, on Microsoft’s earnings call, CFO Peter Klein briefly mentioned that Microsoft’s “next mobile operating system” would be announced “in a few weeks.” Conveniently, just a few weeks from now, the Mobile World Congress convention will be taking place — beginning February 15th — in Barcelona, Spain. This latest development seems to be consistent with previous reports that also put WinMo 7′s premier at MWC. We’re not sure about you, but we’re pretty excited to see Apple, Google, RIM, Nokia, and Microsoft all seriously contending for mobile device market share.

They better be announcing it’s coming out before the 4th Quarter of the year.

I have been on the apple os for the past year. I do miss the windows mobile os, but it needs to be seemless like the apple os. also, they really need to get some apps in their market place some how.

i’ve got high hopes considering how nice windows 7 turned out to be. the htc hd2 is sick hardware and even though it’s running the so-so winmo 6.5, the sense ui makes it so slick. if microsoft can put out something has touchscreen software comparable to the iphone os (http://www.bgr.com/2010/01/10/diy-touchscreen-analysis-reveals-that-the-iphone-does-while-the-droid-doesnt/) then we’re really talkin. thing is the iphone is always guna have an advantage over oss like android and winmo because the iphone only has one screen size, only has one type of processor, ram, etc. (per gen. at least..) so the apps can be better tuned and optimized for that specific platform, whereas the other 2 need to be compatible with 10+ manufacturer’s choice of various levels of hardware.. not to mention, the iphone had close to 50 000(+?) apps before the other guys even opened their “app stores”, right? so the iphone will probably always be slightly ahead of the game. the people buying android and winmo will be guys like me who hate the iphone obsession everyone has and/or are too poor to pay 300 on a 3-year term for even the “best” of phones (i’m in canada, yes we have to sign on for 3 years, and yes it sucks ass) so we go for really wicked phones in their own right, that are priced at half that of the iphone..

@pj you obviously meant htc hd2 has ‘slick’ hardware!

correction: Apple, Google, RIM, Nokia, and Microsoft AND Palm.

i know it’s small potatoes right now, but they really do have the best of the mobile OSes

    Hey BGR,
What happened to Nexus One winners results?

I wonder how close WM7 with be to Win7. Whilst I really want to WM7 go bog, I am also looking at the increase in phone CPU speed and am again wondering if we won’t see Win7 coming to phones (with a phone program) somewhat as Apple have done with the iPad, that’s also a phone.

Potentially this could make every laptop into and admittedly rather clumsy phone by having a USB SIM card like the current crop of 3G modems and a headset + the phone program.

    Hurry up!

It better be a hell of a lot better than wm6.5..I’ll probably switch to Android long before it comes out anyway.

If winmo 7 is announced, and looks good, I’m switchin!

We’ve been seeing some pretty awesome ROMs in 6.5.3 (with more new builds rumored) and I hope 7 is the impetus for more powerful phones running this OS. WM is still the most customizable platform – I have no intention of going anywhere else as long as the hardware stays up to snuff as well.

yea same here. i will definitely be switching

This is a second thought. If windows mobile can somehow support an itunes account or sync up with itunes. I would def. run back to windows mobile. The one thing that bothers me about the iphone is the generic environment. The drawback to the windows mobile environment is the lack of apps.

Interest is going down in WinMo, as evident by the number of responses to this article. How did MS fall behind so fast? Too many better options out there now for WinMo to be viable much longer, except to those who really love MS (few) and really hate Apple (many). Even then, Droid is a better choice in the long run.
