BlackBerry Messenger gets an OTA update

Software

bbm-update

It’s nowhere near as exciting as, oh, let’s say the release of OS 5.0 for all current generation devices on the market prior to the Storm2, but BlackBerry Messenger 5.0 has received its first update. Coming in at 2.5MB, BBM 5.0.0.55 doesn’t appear to offer anything new in terms of feature, but does include some much needed refinements to the otherwise solid app. What do we mean by that? You’re finally able to get visible previews of incoming pictures and the menu options been reorganized, now presented in a logical fashion. Want in on the action? Of course you do. Just hit up blackberry.com/messenger on device and upgrade away.

I’m all for upgrades, but I’m kinda sad that all of the latest BlackBerry IM apps weigh in at ~2MB or higher. Surely they could share some code or combine them all into a single multi-protocol messenger?

  • Pooooop

At least it fixes the annoying bug when sending a photo using bbm…

  • LoSo

Someone explain to me how to get “full-screen previews of incoming pictures”…. Cuz that sheet aint working on my 9700.

    Is that for all blackberrys

    • MRCUR

      OS 4.7 and above I believe…

Blackberry App World still downloads version 5.0.0.33. I wish RIM would get the latest versions in App World right away so you’d get automatically notified that a new version is available. You gotta go to http://www.blackberry.com/messenger as indicated in the BGR blog post to get it.

Have they fixed these issues with this build…?

    1. When removing the battery, any chats that were in BBMessenger are gone and they show up as a “blank space” in the SMS&MMS inbox.

    2. When you currently have a chat open with a contact and you hit the end key to go back to the homescreen, an incoming chat from that person will show up briefly in the notifications area in the banner and then disappear. If you don’t happen to see it show up or hear/feel the vibration, then you have no way of knowing that they messaged you back unless you go back into BB Messenger.

    3. Not really an issue, but can you add mobile contacts to groups and not just PIN’s?

    • Tom

      4. Oh and another issue was that if there is an open chat that stupid little red star shows up at the top of BB Messenger even when no new messages have been received. It only goes away when you remove all your conversations.

Lots of people won’t leave bb because of bb messenger. One of the best mobile to mobile messengers.out there

If only bb could talk to other messengers

    • Eric

I completely agree and I am one of those people.

    • 8800

      same here

  • swivet

It would be amazing if RIM would create software for other devices

  • swivet

…as well as a desktop client that essentially used a virtual pin to connect to Blackberry servers and thus open up BBM to other platforms. It could be massive for them in penetrating marketshare in other areas.

  • blah

Odd… they must of pulled it already. When I try to upgrade from *.33 BBM says it’s the latest version.

  • joe cool

any release date info for the 9100 and 9650?????

  • jimbo

Google voice is better, works just like a regular SMS, so its open, and its free!

    • Larry Love

Too bad you can’t actually send MMS with Google Voice…..

      • Paay4

Agreed. I wish google voice would allow mms and then i could finally ditch my txt plan all together.

  • Coach Lon

If you update to any newer version of BBM, do you keep your contact list? That is the most concerning issue I have with over-air updates, losing your contact list. Thanks for the input.

    • ljp

Yes. Your contact list is retained.

    • hasan1

it wasnt retained for me. Make sure you back it up first.

The updates to BBM are always nice to have… BUT WHERE’S THE 5.0 FOR MY TOUR BITCHES?!

    • 8800

      its avalible… head to crackberry

  • joe cool

trackpad tour info? 9100 inf0? im just wondering how not even a year ago ppl were crzy for the tour and now this site never reports naything relating to the wifi and trackpad upgrades to the tour? i mean android was not nearly as a big deal on t mobile. they have had the g1 for almots 2 years now and that phone does have android.

  • scm209

Actually I did get notified via email from BB that the update was available. It sort of, and I stress, sort of fixes the picture problem. If the person sending the photo doesn’t have the newest version of Bbm then the “preview” is EXTREMELY small. When you zoom in then it pixels out and is blurry. Come on, Black Berry! You can do better than that. What happened to the old days when you sent a pic thru bbm and just hit View.

  • L8900

I find that when I send pictures to those who haven’t upgraded, they send like they did with the old BBM (I guess that would make sense, but it proves that it’s still possible…). I haaaattteeee the fact they make you download them now. It tries to overwrite picture numbers that I already have :(

I also find that when I go to send a picture to a BBM contact via the picture screen, my contact list is COMPLETELY random and not alphabetized at all. Makes it plenty annoying when you have more than a couple contacts..

  • brad

when does os 5.0 come out anyway/

    my 8900 is crying.

  • alex

another feature missing with this new version is they removed the spell check feature within the typing area. im sure there will be newer versions to come before this one is complete.

  • MO7710

is it really worth it? using all that space?

  • Èfraim L

This is what RIM posted on their website about the latest (5.0.0.56) of BBM
The latest version of BlackBerry® Messenger addresses some of the issues identified in BlackBerry® Messenger 5.0.0.33, such as file transfer not working or working slowly, no file preview, and file transfer requests expiring after a short period of time. This version does not include any new features. The Check Spelling As You Type feature has also been restored for all devices.

  • Natalie

The preview of the pic is tiny and pretty much the same size as in your BBM convo! There really wasn’t much change. They need to have the preview like before!

  • jfk1976

they need to just switch back to how the pic transfer worked on the previous versions. period. nothing else will be satisfactory. if someone wants the hi-res, then you can email the pic to them.

i have another issue where sometimes the entry field doesnt show what im typing. i have to end the conversation and start a new one in order to see what im doing again. very weird. i too am only with bberry for bbm. its just so damn good… they should be devoting way more energy to this. it should be as good as google wave by now.
